Chapter Ten

They reach the loft. Aaliyah always wanted to climb the stairs that led to it but never found the courage to do so. She peeks over the side to see the familiar setting where she and Spencer first met. Somehow it seems higher than she thought and although she doesn’t have a fear of heights, she is anxious thinking about having to take the ladder the rest of the way down.

“A few days ago this whole area was just full of crap from shows gone by,” Spencer points out. “But I found new homes for it all.”

Aaliyah looks the space over. There are dozens of pillows scattered all over as if they had been blindly tossed. In the corner, there are two huge comforters, neatly folded, sitting on some milk crates. On top of the comforters is a worn-out knapsack and next to those is a mini cooler. Near those items is her purple overnight bag. She had packed it and given it to Spencer a few days prior. She almost forgot about it.

“You’ve been busy, I see,” Aaliyah says. “When did you find time to do all of this?”

“Little by little, all week…” He grabs a pillow from the floor and places it on a random crate. “Have a seat,” he says as he heads down the ladder.

“Where are you going?” she asks as she sits, glad to finally be off her feet.

“I left some stuff in the study. I’ll be right back.”

The noises above her dwindle down from a dull roar to total silence. Everyone is finally gone. In an hour or less the whole building will be completely empty. It really worked. She and Spencer actually pulled it off.

Spencer returns with another knapsack on his back. He places it next to her, then he drags the mini cooler closer. He sits on the floor in front of her.

“Some night, huh?” he says.

“I have no words.”

“I bet people are looking for us.” He laughs.

He opens the cooler and hands her a can of soda. “I made us some sandwiches to hold us over for a while if you’re hungry.”

“Starving, actually.”

“When we know for sure the coast is clear, we can go to the main level and get whatever else from the cafeteria.”

“I can’t believe this worked,” she admits.

“I knew it would. I duck out here all the time.”

“Why do you do that?”

“What?”

“Hide yourself away from people?”

“I don’t know,” he says, realizing he’d never thought about it.

“I get like that too, sometimes. Plus… I like to explore. Discover new things. Even if it’s only new to me.”

“Lucky for me.”

He smiles up at her and she returns his smile. They eat their food in silence waiting out for the time they are sure all other people are gone from the building and they are truly alone.

Spencer helps Aaliyah out of her garment and she changes into her street clothes. She grabs her mini backpack and he grabs his own carry-all before they quietly make the trek from the loft to the rickety elevator.
