Chapter Eight
For an hour after the President had made his announcement, the people in the room questioned one another about the logistics of the problem. Each question was answered in turn, some of those answers supplied by Tynan. And each minute, the assault force got that much closer to the target area. They had been dispatched shortly after the Vice President had adjourned the meeting earlier that day. Now they were approaching Europe and would land at an American base to be transferred to transport that could land on the aircraft carriers.
As they talked, details of the operation surfaced. The Sea Stallion helicopters and the crews were already on the carrier. Top-secret coded messages had alerted them and they had begun the flight planning on the carrier. Aerial photos—some of them supplied by satellite—maps, and even a Michelin Guide were used. Television footage showing the streets of Yoba City were transmitted, and coded messages from the embassy in Yoba City provided exact answers to a number of questions.
So, while the assault force, trained in the tactics of taking and holding buildings, of killing terrorists and freeing the hostages, was flying across the Atlantic, the men on the aircraft carrier were preparing for the flight in. They were searching for the best landing sites, given the location of the assault.
Tynan listened to all this with growing admiration, amazed that they could put the whole force together and get them into the air as quickly as they had. He still had questions such as why it had been necessary to send him into Yoba City. True, he had located the building where the hostages were held, but that was a matter of luck. And he still didn’t know who Christine Mitchell was.
As he sat listening to all this, watching the men and women as they worked with the President, he noticed something else. This wasn’t like a normal staff meeting where people sometimes became angry with one another, or outshouted one another for the floor: everyone waited for the President. If he was talking, they were silent and if he asked a question of a specific individual, that person answered it. It didn’t matter if someone else had a better answer or more information. Later, that might come out, or that person might ask to comment after the first one finished. No one stepped on anyone else.
The whole atmosphere was rather subdued, with the exception of the cheering that had met the President’s announcement. Now they were working to determine if someone had overlooked something. Problems were attacked as they arose. No one mentioned the name of the person who had made a mistake or caused a problem, but Tynan noticed that one of the President’s aides wrote it down probably for a private ass-chewing session later.
Tynan glanced at his watch, although there were half a dozen clocks in the room. One gave the local time, one had Zulu time, and one with a hand-lettered sign said, YOBA CITY. Another gave H
