Chapter Ten

“YOU HAVE thirteen new messages. First message from Michael Plahm. Subject: voice-over needed for commercial.”

After Kyle had completed his first poststroke narration, the word got out he was available. He was so flooded with requests that he needed to clear his e-mail inbox at least three times a day. He enlisted Lily as his booking agent to screen the requests. Most of the contacts didn’t realize that he couldn’t sync his voice with the lips of a character, so he was stuck with book reading and voice-overs that didn’t require synchronization. That thinned the pack by half. But all of a sudden, he was in demand for gay romance novels and was booked solid for the next three months. He tried to send work to some of his fellow artists who’d taken over the workload when he was out of commission—Greg, Max, David, KC, Nick—but some authors said they would wait for him. He was going to get calluses on his fingertips from all the reading he was doing just to keep up.

And then there were the guest appearances. This was anime and comic con season. The first was going to be in North Carolina for Animazement over Memorial Day weekend. Then Anime Midwest in Chicago for Ecos in July, and the last one for him, YaoiCon in San Francisco in September. He used to enjoy cons, but now the thought of them terrified him. What would it be like to navigate them without normal vision?

He was swimming in work, but his first loves, anime voice-overs and movie dubbing, were out of the picture.

And then there was running with Seth, who was easy to talk to, and they got on well.

“You should invite him for dinner.” Lily had brought over takeout Thai for their discussion of the latest bookings.

“Invite who?”

“Seth. I’ve yet to meet him face-to-face. I usually see his fine backside as he’s running home.”

“He has a fine ass?”

“Yes he does, baby brother. And since that was all I got to see of him, I googled him. He has a fine face to match that fine backside. Yum.”

“Neither of us have time or inclination to date, Lily. We’re both off the market.”

Lily huffed. Kyle knew what was coming. “You can have him over for dinner without it being romantic. You’ve been running together for three weeks now. You’re just being chickenshit.”

“He works with people in California. He works late. That’s why we run at the time we do. Plus he has his time with his mom.”

“Uh-huh. All good excuses for avoiding a relationship. I know.”

Kyle dug his chopsticks into the carry-out box with a bit more vigor than he should have and poked a hole in the bottom. The sauce from his pad thai dripped onto his lap. Of course it missed his napkin. Damn it!

He tossed the container on the table and reached for another napkin.

“What did the box do to you?”

“Lily, just… just shut it. Okay?”

“Touchy touchy. Must be because you’ve not gotten laid for a long time.
