Chapter 19

It had been about a week since Zoya last saw Leila so she wasn’t surprised when she opened the door to find her standing there.

“Hey, girl.” Leila cheerfully zipped past Zoya into the foyer of the house.

Zoya felt a little uneasiness settle over her, but tried to push it aside as she closed the door. Leila was her friend. There was no need to feel uncomfortable around her.

“What’s up?” Zoya walked into the family room with Leila right behind her. “You want something to drink?” She’d made a pitcher of lemonade and was just about to enjoy a glass herself and go over the floor plans the designer had given her yesterday when Leila knocked on the door.

Leila raised a brow. “Something a little stronger than that,” she giggled. It was past two in the afternoon and she’d already had an eventful morning. “Rum would be good.”

Zoya obliged, learning long ago that Leila drank at whatever time pleased her. “So what brings you by?” She finished fixing the drinks and walked over to sit on the couch. Leila had already taken a seat at the other end.

“I haven’t seen you in awhile. Thought I’d drop by and see if you wanted to do something today.” Leila picked up her glass, tried not to stare at Zoya’s bared legs.

“I’m going over these plans then Jamal and I are going out tonight.”

“You’ve been hanging out with him a lot?” Leila questioned, not sure she liked that idea.

Zoya frowned. “He is my husband.”

“I know he’s your husband. I’m just asking if things are going okay between you two.”

Zoya relaxed against the back of the chair, folded one leg under the other and faced Leila sideways. “We’re getting better.”

“You give him some yet?”

Leila looked at her intensely, Zoya wasn’t sure she wanted to answer. “We’re working on our emotional relationship right now, the physical isn’t as important.”

“Oh.”

Was that relief she saw on Leila’s face?

“How about you and Donnie? You two doing okay?” Since seeing Leila with those guys in her bedroom, Zoya had been concerned for her friend’s marriage.

“Same as always. Donnie does his thing and I do mine.”

“How long do you think that’ll last? I mean, don’t you have any feelings for him at all?”

Leila rubbed the rim of her glass, stared down at the dark liquid for a few minutes before answering. “I used to be in love, you know that fantasy shit. But I learned the hard way that dreams don’t come true.” She looked over at Zoya. “At least some of them don’t.”

Leila’s dark eyes raked over her body and Zoya shifted. “Aren’t you tired of playing the game?”

Leila chuckled, put her glass down on the table. She turned in the chair, sliding closer to Zoya until their knees touched. “I’m tired of playing with the same people. I think it’s time to draft some new players.” She thought briefly of Davon and the things he’d done to her last night in the back of her car. That boy
