CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“All right, Lindy.” Underhill smacked his shoulder as he slipped into the open seat between Kelly and Anders the following morning at breakfast. “Way to go, man.”

Kelly glanced at him, puzzled. The expression was mirrored on Anders’ face. Clearly, he didn’t know what Trevor was talking about either.

“I’m sorry?” Anders lifted a mug of green tea to his lips.

“I knew you had it in you.” Underhill gave him a crooked grin, scooping up a forkful of eggs. “Who was she? Or, uh, he, I guess. Since you’re not fussy either way.”

Anders’ mug clinked against the saucer. “Excuse me?”

“Dude, it’s cool,” Underhill said with a shrug. “You’re allowed to, you know, enjoy yourself. I mean, I didn’t need to overhear it but whatever. I’m happy for you.”

Kelly looked down at his plate of food, willing his entire body to not flush.

Trevor had heard them last night. Fuck.

Kelly glanced up to see Anders hadn’t turned red. But no. If anything, he looked a little green.

Underhill looked around at their teammates as if belatedly realizing he’d made a mistake.

“Sorry, dude,” he said awkwardly. “If you don’t want to talk about it or whatever, that’s cool.”

Anders cleared his throat. “I do prefer to be private about my personal life but you’re right. I, uh, had someone in my room last night. I apologize if we kept you up.”

The entire room went completely still, not even the usual clink of silverware on plates interrupting the quiet.

“Hey, that’s great news, man,” Hartinger said after a moment, a wide grin spreading across his face. “Glad to hear you’re, uh, enjoying yourself.”

The other guys chimed in with their congratulations. Kelly knew they meant well but he could see Anders growing more uncomfortable by the moment. Kelly desperately wanted to change the subject but he wasn’t sure how to without drawing attention to himself.

Instead, he shoveled suddenly tasteless food in his mouth and tried to ignore the comments flying around the room.

Thankfully, breakfast ended eventually, and Kelly left, making a beeline for the elevator. He was halfway there before Gabriel caught up with him.

“Is everything okay, Irish?” he asked quietly.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine,” Kelly said. “I needed to grab some um, toothpaste from downstairs. I wanted to get it before the bus leaves for practice.”

Gabriel gave him a searching look. “Want some company?”

“Uh, sure,” Kelly said after a momentary pause. He couldn’t think of a reason to turn Gabriel down and a group of their teammates were heading toward them. Kelly didn’t want them to get dragged into whatever this was.

Gabriel was silent until they reached the stairwell. He pulled open the door and gestured for Kelly to go ahead. “Let’s take the stairs.”

Kelly grumbled under his breath but stepped inside. When they were halfway down the first flight, Gabriel caught his upper arm with a gentle grip, stopping him in his tracks.

“Are you upset at Anders for moving on from his wife?”

“What?” Kelly spun around and stared at Gabriel, shocked.

“I know he’s a friend of your family and you knew her.
