In 1988 Joe set the record (almost) straight to Melody Maker: ‘Everybody blames Mick for this, but I came up with the chorus and the verses and he wrote the tune. A lot of people go that wimpy bullshit! ’ Mick has since stated, on numerous occasions, that he believes Joe wrote the lyric from his perspective - imagining what life must have been like for him growing up on the 18th floor of Wilmcote House with his Nan, his only contact with his mother being via post and long-distance calls - and gave it to him to sing as a sort of present. Other people close to the Clash - including Johnny Green, Kosmo Vinyl and Chris Salewicz - have gone on record to say that Joe told them he had written the song for Mick.
