Jeremy admired her conviction and loyalty to friends. He hoped like hell Rose was right.

SEVEN

Lavender roses represent enchantment.

The steady clomp-clomp of the horse’s hooves as they struck asphalt echoed around them. The slow, rhythmic sway of the white carriage lulled Rose into a relaxed state. She lounged against the back of the cushioned seat and surveyed the sights through half-closed eyes. Jeremy sat close to her, his jean-clad leg plastered against hers. The voice of the tour guide droned on as he slowed and talked about the historical importance of the mansion on their right.

They were on about the twenty-fifth block of an almost thirty block tour of Charleston’s historic downtown district. They’d seen mansions, churches, houses, gardens, and parks. She’d learned plenty about the history, architecture, flora, and people that make up the ‘Holy City.’ “I see why you and Gabe chose to relocate here,” she whispered. “It’s beautiful.”

“That it is.” His gaze, however, was glued to her. Several times she’d caught him staring at her instead of the architecture.

Late fall staked its claim on the coastal south, bringing a brisk chill to the area. A light blanket covered her lap. Rose clutched the soft material with both fists to stop herself from reaching out to touch Jeremy.

She squirmed, inadvertently rubbing against Jeremy’s side. She cleared her throat and raised her voice to be heard by the driver. “I think my friend was married somewhere around here, one of the luxury boutique hotels.”

“You think?” The driver raised curious brows.

“There wasn’t much notice, and I had previous obligations out of state.” She didn’t want to mention she missed the wedding because of the band’s touring schedule. She knew Jeremy wanted her to keep a low profile, no mention of the Flower Patch or her minor celebrity status.

“You remember the name of the place?” the driver asked.

She stumbled over a couple of words. “Something like that. I can’t remember exactly. My friend did tell me if I was ever in town to drop by the restaurant and try the coconut cake.”

The man grinned wide. “I know the place.” He named a restaurant and Inn that sounded vaguely familiar. “It’s a couple of blocks over. Want me to drop you here?”

She had no idea. Rose looked at Jeremy and shrugged.

“I know the place, and it’s not too far from where we parked. Here will be fine,” Jeremy assured the driver.

The man found an opening and guided the horse and carriage to the curb. Jeremy exited the carriage and turned back to face her. He held out a hand, she grasped it, and he helped her make a graceful exit to the sidewalk.

Rose smiled at the driver. “Thanks, I enjoyed the ride. Make sure you give Bugsy,” she named the horse, “an extra carrot tonight.”

The driver tipped his hat and grinned back at her. “Will do, ma’am. Enjoy the rest of your stay in our wonderful city.”

Jeremy stepped close to the driver and tipped him a couple of bills. The driver’s grin got even wider.
