Thirty-Seven: The Builder
âBig pyramid,â Crunch said.
The biggest structure Caitlin had seen in the Realms before this had been Mardukâs Ziggurat in the city of Tirazis. That structure was a good three hundred feet, about triple the size of the tallest ziggurats built on Earth, where builders hadnât enjoyed the benefits of magic and godlike powers. The Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl was over five hundred feet tall, a man-made mountain of stone.
The trip to the pyramid marked a first for the party: they encountered several groups of monsters, wiped them out without working up a sweat â and got zero XP. Their attackers had been beast-people with jaguar or snake heads and armed with spears, flint-tipped maces, and bows and arrows. They would have provided a tough fight for a regular group of level thirty Adventurers, but against the party, even without Eshaiâs force fields, they were as dangerous as a bunch of basic boars. The system that governed the Realmsâ rewards had decided that they hadnât earned any. They did get some loot baggies, filled with a few silver coins and low-grade potions (no Master ones).
Nobody had complained much. Caitlin felt it was a good sign; the Labyrinth hadnât altered those defenders, at least. There had to be a limit to how much cheating it could do. Of course, that probably meant it was saving its cheating for something with more punch than random minions. Probably the next boss, or the giant they should be encountering any moment now.
âAnybody see anything?â Caitlin asked.
Spongebob and Tranaxx had a handful of Elementals flying above the group; nobody had seen anything. The Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl was surrounded by a ring of hills, all of which were barren and empty of life. The narrow trail they were on had no visible hiding places, and Caitlin hadnât spotted any traps. And this time they had carefully watched the sky, looking for any suspicious clouds. Nothing had popped up.
âLet us head toward the pyramid,â Dan-El said. âCaitlin and Lootz in front, the rest of the group a hundred feet behind, Tilly in the rear, Crunch and Stefan guarding the flanks.â
The group moved forward cautiously. The giant had to be nearby, and a sudden attack from a raid boss equivalent was no joke. If the tanks couldnât grab its attention, a quick attack could wipe out half the party. Caitlin had wanted to go even further ahead, but until they knew where the giant was, being too far apart could leave her unable to intervene if the monster managed to reach the rear.
This time, the Quinametzin didnât sneak up on them. It had been in front of the party all along.
Caitlin was the first to spot movement on the structure in front of them. She was able to call out a warning as an entire section of the building came to life. An eighty foot figure detached itself from the pyramid. Instead of clothing, its upper torso was clad in a smaller replica of the pyramid itself. Another pyramid, the size of a house in its case, was held in the creatureâs hand.
