After the show, we all headed back to the hotel. Evaâs parents were staying too, so everyone was keen to give them the VIP experience. Hudson wanted to take them out on the town, but the rest of the guys had quickly vetoed that. Letty had called ahead and asked the hotel to provide pizzas and beers for everyone.
âIâm still buzzing,â Mrs. Walker said as we filed into the suite. We had exclusive use of the top two floors. The band were in the penthouse, with Evaâs parents, Letty and I, Alistair and some other key staff staying on the floor below.
âWeâll make a fan out of you yet, Evaâs Mom.â Hudson slung his arm around her, and she blushed.
âJesse, please call me Jesse.â
âOkay, Jesse, put the young man down now and come sit with your husband.â
Everyone chuckled at that.
âI donât know about you,â Hudson went straight for the refrigerator, âbut I need a beer.â
âOoh, me too.â Molly went over to him but hesitated as she passed Evaâs parents. âJust one,â she said.
âRelax, Molly. We trust you,â Mr. Walker said. âBesides, I think we all need a drink after that show. Is it always so...?â
âWild?â Damon asked.
âI was going to say intense, but wild works.â
They launched into a conversation about some of the craziest shows the band had ever played, while I joined Letty in the kitchen area to serve the pizzas. My stomach grumbled as I flipped the lid on a pepperoni.
âHungry?â She smirked.
âI havenât eaten since lunch.â And that had only been a grab and go sandwich from the spread the arena had laid out for the band.
âYeah, things can get kind of hectic. But you need to make sure you look after yourself, okay?â
âYes, Mom.â I smiled.
âOnce we leave for Europe, the schedule will be twice as crazy. I canât have you dropping down on me.â
âEat, got it.â
âGood. Now grab some plates and napkins and letâs go feed our rock stars.â
Her words made the knot in my stomach tighten. I shook off the sensation, pulling open cabinets to locate the plates. But as I reached up to grab a stack, I felt someone behind me.
âNeed some help, intern?â Levi drawled.
I steeled myself, feeling a kick of irritation at the smugness in his voice.
âNo, thank you.â I finally managed to pull the plates down, sliding them onto the counter.
Our eyes collided and my breath caught.
âYouâre avoiding me,â he said.
âNo, Iâm not.â I grabbed the napkins, adding them to the plates, and went to move around him. But Levi stepped into my space.
âI think you are.â
âLevi, please...â My lips pursed.
âThe truth, then you can pass.â The corner of his mouth kicked up. âWhy are you avoiding me?â
âFine.â I let out an exasperated breath. âBecause this, us, it isnât a good idea.â
He inched closer, forcing me back against the counter. I glanced over his shoulder, but everyone was busy talking and laughing. From over there, I doubted anyone would be able to see just how intimate we were standing.
âOne night,â he leaned in, breathing the words against my lips.
