âTHE HELL I will,â Jason grumbled. âI can bunk with Genna and Pat.â
âPatâs going to have her hands full trying to get Genna to go to sleep tonight,â Clyde pointed out.
âI donât want to sleep either!â Jason declared. âHow the hell can you even suggest sleeping while Trajin is missing?â
âBecause weâre going to need all the rest we can get if we are going to comb the woods and find him tomorrow.â
âYou didnât even believe that he was in the woods!â Jason yelled, angry now.
Clyde blew out a slow breath and studied him. Jasonâs bright green eyes were flashing a mix of anger and fear. His arms were locked around Genna, who was holding tight to him, and both seemed to be feeding off each otherâs panic and near hysteria. He was pretty certain, from his dealings with Genna, that the young woman was very sensitive to the feelings and emotions of others and had to work hard to keep herself calm and aloof. It was also likely why she came off as eccentric, especially when she launched into bouts of talking to herself and to things that werenât there. Still, Clyde knew he was right. They all needed to get some sleep so that they could start searching when the storm was over. He hoped he could make Jason see reason.
âHereâs an idea,â Dan interjected. All eyes turned his way. âHereâs what we do. I have a bunch of sleeping bags. Everyone go to their rooms, bring down some blankets, weâll spread out the sleeping bags and weâll sleep down here together. If the sheriff shows up tonight weâll all be here to hear what he has to say. And this way, we can keep an eye on one another.â
Pat nodded. ââBout time you said something smart, Professor.â
âThat sounds okay,â Jason relented.
Dan was clearly pleased. âAll right, good. Iâm going to finish locking up down here, you all go grab what you need from your rooms anââ
A loud knocking on the door startled them, especially when it was followed by a horrendous crash of thunder. Dan rushed to the door, thinking it was the sheriff, but he cautiously asked who it was before touching the knob.
âOpen this damn door!â Marjorie Wilson demanded from the other side.
Eyes widening, Dan yanked it open.
She stood on the steps, arms crossed, her eyes steely and cold as rainwater flowed down her face. âWould someone care to explain to me how the hell you lost my son!â
