If nothing else, he has skills, I thought as I watched him pour what I assumed was whiskey into the two glasses. More to get a drink than anything else, I eventually sat opposite him in the other armchair, which, as soon as I sat in it, felt blissfully comfortable. That, in combination with the roaring fire, made me want to go to sleep.
âPlease,â Mirahorn said as he gestured to the whiskey glass on the table. âHelp yourself.â
I reached out and took the half-full glass, downing the contents in one before refilling the glass again. The alcohol made me feel even more relaxed as I sunk into the armchair and stared wearily at my host.
âYou have a lot of explaining to do,â I told him as I crossed my legs and rested my glass on the arm of the chair. âLike what exactly do you mean when you say youâve been watching me my whole life?â
âI didnât say I was watching you,â he said, getting up to retrieve a long pipe from atop the mantel of the fireplace. When he sat back down, the tobacco or whatever it was in the pipe's bowl seemed to ignite without him having to do anything, immediately filling the air with its pungent aroma. âItâs more that Iâve been keeping tabs on you, to use the modern vernacular.â
âAnd why would you do that? Because you think Iâm some kind of Chosen One?â
His deep blue eyes were unreadable as he stared at me, puffing contentedly on his long pipe. He struck me as the type not to be fazed by very much, and I put that down to his age. I had no idea how old he was, but I got the distinct impression he had been around for a very long time. Long enough to transcend the petty concerns and ways of thinking most people had.
âI know you are,â he said. âBut do you know it, thatâs what really matters here.â
I shook my head. âHow am I supposed to know it? Because a few people have said so?â
âI thought you would have felt it by now.â
âNot really. I just feel like a pawn in a game that I donât even know the rules of.â
Mirahorn smiled. âWell, we must change that.â
I stared into the fire for a moment, then said, âYou knew my mother.â
âYes, her whole life. Her passing still fills me with sadness.â
âDoes it now? Why didnât you do more to protect her if you knew her life was in danger?â
Mirahorn looked toward the dancing flames for a moment. âRegrettably, there was nothing we could do. I put Teresa on the Council to monitor Iolas. Somehow, he and the Order he is a part of found out about your motherâs ties to us. They are always trying to kill us, to wipe us out, for they know we are the only ones who pose any threat to them, though that threat has lessened over the yearsâ¦until you came along, that is.â
âNo pressure then.â
âYou just have to believe, Corvin.
