‘The kid rode out,’ the old man said as he handed Fury the reins of his horse. ‘He paid everything up, though. You don’t owe me a single cent.’

Fury looked at the old man, recognising him as the man who had run for the sheriff when he’d had Billings cold in his sights. He didn’t hold it against the old man though, since he’d had no idea what had been going on, what this was all about. All he had seen had been two men shooting up his stables.

‘Obliged,’ Fury said and led the horse out of the stable and onto the street where the sheriff sat his horse, waited for him.

Fury climbed into his saddle and turned to face the lawman. ‘I ain’t coming back to this town,’ he said. ‘I’m riding straight on out of here. You can just as well give me my guns here and now and save yourself a ride.’

‘Just the same I’ll ride along with you to the town border,’ the lawman said. ‘It’s such a lovely day for a ride and besides I’m sure a talkative fellow, you will appreciate the company.’

Despite himself, Fury gave a tight smile at that. He kicked his horse forward and the lawman took up the same pace, riding besides him.

As they rode, Fury wondered how far away the kid was. He didn’t blame him for riding out on him. After all, the kid said he had killed a man, had even thought the two bounty hunters up in the mountains had been trailing him. Likely the law had spooked him, couldn’t blame him for that. Of course he’d also run off when the bounty hunters had shown up, but that time he’d returned and pretty much saved Fury’s life. Fury wondered if the kid was laying in wait even now, that any moment a well-aimed stone would unhorse the sheriff.

He sure hoped not. All he wanted to do now was to leave the sheriff behind and ride out after Billings. He been lucky so far in that the sheriff hadn’t seen any wanted posters on him, and the sooner they reached the town border and he was left alone the better he would feel.

As it turned out they reached the town border without incident and the lawman handed Fury’s guns over, together with the money Fury’d had in his pocket when he’d been arrested.

Fury hitched his gun belt, reached across and took his rifle from the sheriff. He slid it into his boot.

‘I guess this is where we part company,’ the lawman said.

Fury nodded, said nothing and spurred his horse into a gallop.

The lawman sat his horse for several long moments, watching until Fury became little more than a speck on the distant horizon, then turned and, keeping a steady pace, started back to town.

Tracking Billings was not an option, he’d had too much of a head start for that. The ground Fury now travelled upon was sun baked to such an extent that a herd of stampeding buffalo would be hard pushed to leave a mark.
