The next day, Leah was surprised to awaken to an empty bed. Typically, Anne was wide awake beside her, telling her good morning. She looked in the bathroom, but she wasn’t there, so she continued out to the hallway and down the stairs. The house was quiet. Hearing the tv on low in the living room, she went towards it. There she found Anne reclined back on the couch, resting lightly, with Little Anne curled up under her arm and passed out on Anne’s stomach. Leah’s heart swelled with adoration at the sight before her. She reached down to brush a lock of hair from Anne’s face, causing her eyes to shoot open and her to quickly grab Leah’s wrist. Seeing who it was, she relaxed. Leah smiled and leaned down to kiss Anne’s cheek. “I’ll make us some coffee,” she whispered, Anne nodding in response. A few minutes later, Anne joined her just in time for Leah to offer her a cup, then lead her outside to the porch. “It’s nice out this morning, I figured we could sit out here and watch the ducks,” she offered. Anne agreed and took a seat next to her at the round mosaic-topped table. It was silent for a while as the two enjoyed their drinks. “What’s on that mind of yours?” Leah prodded. Anne looked over at her, curious. “I know when my baby’s lost in thought,” she answered Anne’s unspoken question. “I just feel guilty. Knowing what you’ve gone through; knowing what that man did to you. It’s my fault.” Anne folded her hands in her lap and hunched her shoulders. Leah bit her lip, unsure of how to answer. It was true: if Anne had never disappeared, Leah would not have married Brad, and she would never have endured what she did. She stood and moved around the table, maneuvering herself into Anne’s lap. “Baby, we can’t let the past dictate our present and future. We’re on a path towards healing together. Yes, I went through a lot. But I survived it and I’m here with you now. Don’t let all that happened eat you up, just move on to something wonderful with me. Alright?” she finished with a sweet, dimpled smile. Anne nodded slowly, caressing Leah’s sides. She slipped her fingers under the bottom of Leah’s shirt and began softly stroking her skin. Leah stiffened, freezing in place. Anne ran her fingers very lightly over the end of a stretch mark on each side. Leah’s breath caught. Before she could squirm away, Anne wrapped her arms around her, planting her palms on the small of her back. “It’s okay, my darlin’. Remember? We’re not letting the past dictate us now. My mind hasn’t changed about how beautiful you are,” she whispered. Leah slowly relaxed, bringing her body closer to Anne’s. She took the woman’s face between her hands and looked her in the eyes. “I’m trying, baby. I really am,” she spoke.

“I know. So am I. There’s no rush.
