In the hallway, Urilla Wuti, Adia, and Acaraho stood talking.

“We must learn who these females are and make arrangements to speak with them discreetly,” said Adia.

“It seems the Overseer almost expected this. It looked as if he was goading Khon’Tor into something. Did he perhaps know of these other assaults?” wondered Urilla Wuti.

“He knows something. I am sure we will find out soon enough. But Khon’Tor was prepared to confess anyway; I sensed that clearly,” said Adia. Then she continued, “I am worried about Tehya. She has gained some weight, but she is still too thin, and this will make everything worse. Perhaps we should insist she start taking something for the strain.”

Acaraho was watching his mate closely. He knew her well enough to be aware that Khon’Tor’s confession had rocked her. She had believed that what he did to her was an isolated instance, the result of a state of uncontrolled rage inflamed in him by Hakani. Which might, in part, be correct, but which did not explain the other violations. And in some part of her, she would be blaming herself for hiding his crime, even though it was a decision made to protect the community from civil war.

“I am retiring for a while. What about you?” asked Urilla.

“I need some time alone,” said Adia.

“I do not think you should be alone right now,” said her mate.

She shook her head. “I will be alright. Please—”

With difficulty, Acaraho conceded. “I will be with Thorak, checking on the general assembly plans. I will meet up with you there,” he said, before leaving.
