Chapter Thirteen
That evening, Drake pulled into the parking lot and scanned the handful of cars gathered near the entrance. Faith’s wasn’t among them. Maybe he should stay out here, wait for her. Except it looked like his sister was already doing that.
She’d brought his boys as he’d asked.
William was hanging over the bike rack, his feet in the air, head dangling maybe two feet from the ground, while Trevor jumped off the stairs. It looked like he was trying to see how far he could go. The boy wasn’t doing too badly, the little athlete.
Drake stepped out of his truck and sauntered over to his youngest. He surprised him with a tickle to the ribs. “Hey there, big fella.”
William giggled and landed on his feet. “Daddy!” He barreled into Drake’s legs and snagged him in a two-arm hold. “Where’s Ms. Faith?”
An image of her in the truck, encouraging the boys as they drew, that sweet smile lifting her cheekbones, filled his mind, stalling his movement. “She’s coming, but she won’t have time to play.”
“Aw.” William’s bottom lip poked out.
With a laugh, Drake plucked his little guy off the ground and tossed him over his shoulder, then greeted his oldest. “What do you say, Trev-man. You have a good day?”
“Grandma let me name a new calf.”
“Did she now?”
He nodded. “She said maybe I could tend to her and enter her in the fair.”
Drake smiled. That’s what he liked to hear—that his boys were learning to be men, and not staring at a television screen all day. “I bet you’d be real good at that.” He pulled him into a headlock hug.
Trevor grinned and raced back up the stairs, soon preparing for another jump.
Drake sauntered over to his sister, set William on his feet and gave her a one-arm hug. “Thanks for bringing the boys.”
“No problem.” She shaded her eyes and shifted toward the street. “Faith still coming?”
“Yep. She was working on something when I left. Said she wanted to finish up and would meet us later.”
“Good. Oh. Here she comes now.”
He turned, a strange, jittery feeling sweeping through him. Faith pulled in and parked on the far side of his truck. She’d tied her hair back like she often did, with wavy strands framing her face.
His littlest ran to meet her as she stepped from her car, holding a saggy floral backpack.
“Hey, little guy.” She dropped to one knee and gave William a sideways hug.
Trevor soon joined them, standing a few feet away, his lips twitching as if reining in a smile.
Elizabeth hip-bumped Drake. “They sure took to Faith, huh?”
A lump lodged in his throat. “Looks that way.” The more time they spent with her, the more attached they’d become, and the more heartbroken they’d be when she left.
He cleared his throat, stepped closer and tipped his hat.
A tinge of pink colored her cheeks. “Hi.”
“Hey, girl!” Elizabeth called out while bounding toward her. “You have no idea how glad we are to have you. A real artist. Branchville’s got nothing on us this year.
