* * *

Running, I scream, “Jolie!” Chasing after her voice in the night’s foggy air. Cool mist hits my face but I’m still sweating from exertion, trying to find her. She’s calling out to me panicked and I can’t see her. I can’t see anything through the heavy fog. “Shane!” My name gets called from a different direction. I turn and run toward the sound but still nothing. “Jolie! Jolie!” Each time her voice seems to get closer and closer yet there is no warmth, no skin, no beautiful face looking back at me. The voice sounds so close now, like she’s whispering my name in my ear. I turn around in circles searching, grasping, but each time, my arms raise through the fog, I find nothing.

“Jolie!” I wake startled. My eyes open, staring at the ceiling, wiping the sweat off my brow. Another nightmare, one I haven’t had in so long, not since she’s been back. That’s when it hits me. I’m sweating but my body is chilled. There’s no warmth, no Jolie.

Sitting up in a panic, I see her naked body sprawled out on my tantra lounge on the opposite wall from the bed. She’s lying on her side facing me, staring at me with her hands buried under her face.

“Jo, what are you doing?”

Her voice is sad and low when she says, “Watching you. You were having a nightmare.”

Ignoring her, I wipe my face down.

“You have no books.”

A V forms between my brows, questioning. “What are you talking about?”

“I’ve looked.”

“Why are you worried about books?”

“You have two reading chairs, one here and one at home, but no books.”

A small grin rises. She thinks the Tantra chairs are for reading. The grin leaves my face when I see her tremble from a chill on her naked body.

“You’re cold. How long have you been there?”

She still doesn’t move but tells me meekly, “Since you fell asleep.”

This is her putting distance between us after last night. My nightmare was a premonition coming back to haunt me. She will leave me, and I will once again live with nothing but my memories of her.

Getting out of bed, I pull the sheet, bringing it with me. When I get to her, I wrap the sheet around her body and push my arms underneath, lifting Jo up in my arms. She doesn’t fight or even look at me. Sitting down with her on top of me, I cradle her in my arms, warming her body against mine. No words are spoken but at least she doesn’t pull away.

We stay like this for I don’t know how long until I tell her, “This isn’t a reading chair.”

Her face lifts off my chest and she looks up at me. I move us around with me straddling the chair and her straddling me.

“A what?”

My grin comes back. She’s still so naïve about some things. “It’s for sex.” I swallow the lump in my throat and change my statement, “For making love.” She still looks dumbfounded, so I tell her, “It helps in making different positions more comfortable.
