Hope waited until she got Scarlett down for the night and then went to find Ethan and Paul. On the nights when Paul, a town councilman, didnât have a meeting in town, the two of them could be found enjoying a bowl of ice cream while they watched some form of sports on TV. Tonight, they had a Red Sox game on and were talking about how to identify the various types of pitches.
âSee that curve?â Paul asked. âRight at the end? Thatâs how you know itâs a curveball.â
Hope would be forever thankful to Paul for treating Ethan like a son, long before she and Paul had admitted their feelings for each other. Her son hung on Paulâs every word, followed him around like a puppy, and even imitated some of Paulâs mannerisms. She couldnât think of a better man for her son to look up to. She ached at the thought of anything disturbing their harmonious life, especially the man whoâd caused them so much pain in the past.
âCan I talk to you guys for a minute?â
Since theyâd planned this conversation earlier, Paul muted the TV. âSure.â
âI wanted to talk to Ethan about his dad getting out of jail.â
âOh,â Ethan said.
âAs you know, heâs agreed to allow Paul to adopt you.â
âThatâs still happening, right?â Ethan asked, seeming unnerved.
âIt is,â Hope said, âbut your father has requested the opportunity to see you, just once. I believe heâd like the chance to apologize for everything that happened. Paul and I have talked about it, and we think the decision should be yours.â
Ethan thought about that for a minute. âDo I have to see him?â
âNo, you donât.â
He looked at Paul. âWhat do you think I should do?â
Hope wasnât at all surprised that he wanted Paulâs opinion.
âIf I were you, Iâd want to see him and hear him out so I could move on with my life without any regrets, but I want to add that if you think it would be too upsetting for you, then you shouldnât do it.â
âWhat about you, Mom? What do you think I should do?â
âThe part of me that still has a lot of feelings about what he put us through wants you to tell him to go to hell.â
Ethan laughed at her unusually harsh language.
âHowever, the part of me that will always be grateful to him for giving me you thinks that maybe we could give him an hour and then close the book on that chapter of our lives for good.â
âAn hour is really no big deal, right?â Ethan asked.
âItâs nothing in the grand scheme of things,â Paul said.
âAs long as you know that youâre my dad, that you always will be, Iâll see him,â Ethan said.
Paul took Ethanâs empty bowl and placed it on the coffee table. Then he put his arm around the boy. âIâll always be your dad. Nothing could ever change that, and nothing could ever change how much I love you. If you want to see him, now or any time in the future, you should.
