Chapter Eleven
Miles
It was sort of like coming back home all over again, only this time he remembered Jack. Whatever it was that had come between them before, which had put distance between them, for now, at least, it was gone. It might be back, in fact, it almost certainly would, but Miles was going to take full advantage of this time that he had Jack fully back with him.
And the whole thing had gone far better than Miles would have believed possible even a few hours ago. Jack had even let him finger him, and now they were cuddled, safe and warm in their cocoon of blankets, wrapped around each other.
âI guess weâre lucky that the owners of this cabin arenât likely to be up anytime soon,â Miles murmured, idly playing with one of Jackâs nipples as they snuggled together. It was, if anything, a little bit too warm with the big fire and all the blankets, but now he wasnât going to complain about that. Not when the wind was raging around the cabin and outside the window was solid, brilliant white.
âOh, he wonât be up for a while. I think itâs been years since he last bothered,â Jack replied. Seeing Milesâs quizzical look, he smiled slightly. âDo you remember Trent Dixon from high school? This is his parentsâ place, but it was really always his. They let him come up whenever he wanted. He used to throw parties all the time up here, but now he does it at his own house.â
âOh, really?â Miles frowned, nuzzling against Jackâs chest, and he would have been willing to swear that he didnât remember anything of the sort until he found himself speaking again. âYeah, that guy was a dick. Like didnât people call him Dix? Sort of sounds the same.â
There was a long pause, and then Jack laughed, which was a relief because Miles had gotten the sense that Jack was friends, or had been friends, or something, with this Dix guy.
âSo, you do remember,â Jack murmured, and Miles shrugged. âWell, anyway, heâs really not up here at all. Itâs just you and me, babe. Are you scared?â
âNo,â Mile replied, that same glow filling his heart with how casually Jack had once more called him something sweet and affectionate. Damned if it wasnât hard to have a little bit of hope, at least.
âMmm. You should be,â Jack purred, and Miles grinned at him in return. He liked this Jack, who was playful and sexual and fun. In this cabin in the middle of nowhere, Jack seemed like he was free to be himself in a way that he wasnât back in town. Not quite.
They were silent for a few more moments, and Miles let himself enjoy it while he could. Who knew how long it would be? But it was Jack who spoke first, who broke the silence.
âIf youâre remembering now, are you still going to leave?â
For just a second, Miles could almost imagine that Jack cared about the answer.
