Chapter Five

Shane left the community center, drove to Nik’s then parked. He hurried up to his boyfriend’s condo. God. He just wanted to get the hell away from Don. Yes, Don hadn’t done anything yet, but he knew Don’s past. He’d felt his fists. He refused to be a punching bag again, but damn it. Having Don so close wasn’t good. Don knew how to work around rules and get his way.

Nik parked his car behind Shane’s and joined him on the stoop. “Funny seeing you here.” He grinned. “Come here often?”

“I do.” He palmed Nik’s ass. “And you’ll come soon, too.”

“Nik?” An older woman Shane sort of recognized rushed up to them. “Nik?”

“Mrs. Flowers.” Nik unlocked the door. “Hi. What’s wrong?”

“I can’t reach the light in the hallway and I need help changing the bulb. I can’t see a thing and it’s scary.” She held the light bulb. “Please?”

Nik sighed and let go of Shane. “I’ll be right back.” He turned his attention to Mrs. Flowers. “Sure. Let me put my bag down. Mrs. Flowers, this is Shane Sutton, my boyfriend. Shane, this is my neighbor, Mrs. Flowers.”

“Hi.” Shane smiled and tossed his bag into the condo. “Nice to meet you.” Now he remembered her. She’d come to one exercise class, decided she didn’t like the other participants, and left.

“Boyfriend?” Mrs. Flowers nodded. “I still think you’d be better off with my niece.”

Nik groaned. “I’ll be right back.” He kissed Shane and tossed his bag onto the floor just inside the condo. “Make yourself at home.”

“Take your time.” Shane ducked into the condo and flipped on a couple lights. He could see himself living here. Strange, since he hadn’t planned on leaving his apartment. Sure, his place wasn’t big, but it was his. Now he wanted to share his life with Nik and they’d need a bigger space than his apartment.

He kicked out of his shoes, then picked up his bag and carried it to the bedroom. He closed the blinds before stripping. As he yanked his shirt over his head, he spotted the photos on the dresser and couldn’t look away. He knew some of the people in the images—him and Nik in school, Nik with a group of people Shane assumed were other teachers, Nik’s parents and a photo of him with Shane when they were in the seventh grade and had just finished their first cross-country race. They’d been so young and innocent back then.

He smiled. He regretted not making a move on Nik back in school, but they’d found each other now. He loved Nik and soon he’d be able to tell him as much.

He strode into the bathroom and turned on the water in the stall. Within minutes, steam billowed and rustled the curtain. Shane waited a second before venturing into the shower. The hot water stung his body. He bowed his head, letting the heat and pain wash over him as well as wash away the tension and chlorine. He’d done so much in the last few days.
