CHAPTER NINE

THREE WEEKS LATER

Molly sat behind the wheel of her little Honda, willing her nerves to calm. This was a huge step in her writing. No one, not a single other writer, had been granted access to Brooke Swafford. In person. Soon, she would be sitting across from the star of the case. Blythe had been helpful in answering questions for Molly. She had instructed her to play into Brooke’s narcissism. To make sure Brooke felt like she was the most important person in the world. Tash wasn’t the happiest about her being in the same room with Brooke, but her response was nothing but supportive. Molly had steeled herself for being reprimanded and told no, a response Charlotte would have given, but that didn’t happen. Tash asked questions like making sure it would be safe and how Molly felt about the opportunity, and after having an open and thoughtful conversation, she gave her support. It was surreal. Sometimes, Molly would look at Tash in awe at the differences between her and Charlotte.

The sheriff's office was located near the little library in Copper Hollow. It was fairly large for a small town precinct, but the jail was also there. It was three stories, with the basement being a basement full of records and storage. The building was in an L shape with a section towards the back that had a second floor above it. The front of the beige brick building had normal windows, but the part that had a second floor had thin, slit-like windows, and Molly presumed that area held the prisoners. Somewhere up there was the monster named Brooke Swafford. A monster that Molly would soon be seeing. And she couldn’t wait.

She took a deep breath and gave herself a once-over in the mirror. She had put effort into her appearance. From what information she could gather from Blythe, investigating, and online forums, Brooke responded to females only and pretty ones more so. Attracting Brooke’s attention wasn’t necessarily the goal, but if it meant that she could get more out of her, then she’d go with it.

Opening her door, she stepped out and smoothed down her clothes. Miranda had been very clear on what she was allowed to wear and bring with her. She had to submit to a background check, which she willingly did, and she was finally approved to visit. She picked her clothing out, following the rules given to her. No cleavage, no shorts or sleeveless shirts. Nothing displaying gang imagining, profanity, or sexual words or images. She was allowed to bring in her phone, ID and keys, a notepad, and a pen. There would be plexiglass between them if Brooke agreed to meet her.

With her notebook and items in hand, she walked up to the door and pulled it open, noting how heavy it was. She was greeted with a blast of cold air and an empty waiting room with a receptionist behind a bulletproof window. A woman with graying hair contrasting sharply with her rich, sable skin sat behind it.
