Searing pain jolted Ruby Keller awake, shooting from her jaw up the side of her ear. An odd clicking noise pecked at her senses, compounding the throbbing ache in her head and adding to the tumult in her belly. An unbearable weight pressed against her chest, making it difficult to breathe and impossible to move.

She caught the sound of gurgling water nearby. The smell of raw sewage overpowered a sweeter odor of freshly dug earth.

Memories of her abduction flooded back.

Moist earth . . . Dripping water! Had they buried her alive?

Above her a man gave a low chuckle, genuinely amused.

It took her a moment to realize her hands and feet were tied. She was strapped to something, a board or a gurney. She arched her back, screaming impotent threats against her gag, throwing her weight from side to side.

A sickening blow impacted the side of her skull, rattling her but not knocking her out.

“You’ll kill her!” a female voice snapped. It was the waitress from the restaurant.

A man laughed, then coughed up a mouthful of phlegm and spat. “You gave her enough dope to kill a horse. She dies, that’s not my problem.”

A sense of doom crept in, overwhelming Keller’s mind and body. The mumbled voices grew distant, the pain in her head suddenly more intense, and then all went black.
