“He’s not too far from here.”

“Where?”

She put her hands on her hips. “If I tell you, will you go get the notes from Pereira’s wife?”

“What do you think this is, a game? We’re not playing Truth or Dare. This is a homicide investigation. You say you want to know who killed your sister? Then let’s talk to the father of the victim.”

She stuck her chin out defiantly. “Okay. He lives at the Charity Shelter in Kalaeloa.”

Then she seemed to melt. She plopped into the passenger seat. The car was still hotter than the outside. “I should call him to make sure he’s there.” She pulled her phone out of her back pocket, then dropped it on her lap. It slid between her thighs onto the seat. Her eyes closed and she leaned her head back.

She was snoring lightly. Her forehead was dry. Kai looked at his own arm and saw a glaze of sweat. He reached over, fastened her seatbelt, and closed the door. He turned the air conditioner on high. He drove two blocks to a Fast-Stop and left the motor running while he bought two cold half-liter bottles of Gatorade and a bottle of water, and pulled a handful of napkins from the dispenser.

Back in the car he wiped her brow with a damp napkin. She kept snoring. He moistened the napkins again and wiped her cheeks. Her eyes fluttered open. “I got you something to drink.” He handed her a Lemon-Lime Gatorade and she took a few sips, then a few more.

She looked at it as if she’d never seen Gatorade before. She took a few more sips. “I like this. It tastes good.” She looked at the bottle as if memorizing the label. She looked at him, her eyes taking a moment to focus, then out the window at their surroundings, then back at the bottle in her hands. “I got sleepy all of a sudden.” Her cheeks colored a little.

He knew she didn’t want anyone seeing her in a weakened condition. He was the same way. If he fainted in front of his supervisor, he’d jump out a window. “I was really thirsty,” he said. “I stopped to get something. Hope you don’t mind.”

“That’s okay.” She smiled weakly, deciphering his words. Then as if she understood his intent she looked at him directly and said, “Thank you.” She placed her hand gently on his for just a second then turned her attention to outside. Her eyes were tracking now, following a girl walking a frou-frou dog, a man with two twelve-packs of beer pushing open the door, a pickup loaded with five kids in the back. “I should call him to make sure he’s there.” She reached to her back pocket, found no phone, and was a little surprised to find it on the seat sliding under her butt.

She dialed the phone. “Hi, Dad. I’m nearby . . . Can I come and see you? . . . Be there in five . . . Bye .
