Chapter Eight

Sophia

I’d worried a little if having sex with Kieran and Lyell right now would be weird. Since we’re about to leave and have no idea if we’ll be back, we have no idea what we’ll be facing out there. But it felt right. Being with Lyell and Kieran felt right. My body is still buzzing as we leave the showers and make our way back up to our room. Gale is already there, smirking as we come in, before returning to his ever-present notebook.

I sit down next to him on one of the beds, looking at the notebook, but he seems to simply be writing down what’s going on here, quick notes, like a diary. Then I notice the line about Gaia being upset when she saw them this morning, giving me a bad feeling. “What’s with Gaia? Why was she upset?”

“She doesn’t like the idea of us leaving. She wants us to stay.” His voice is low, soft, caring. “Topaz is with her right now. Trying to comfort her. She’s scared we won’t come back.”

“Ah, crap.” I sigh, feeling out for Topaz, giving him a mental nudge and he sends me back sad and worried feelings. “I’ll go check on her. Where are they?”

“Probably in the kitchen, it’s where I left them.”

I get up but he quickly grabs my arm, stopping me. I look at him, at his sad eyes.

“Are you okay?” His eyes flit to the other guys, before looking back at me.

I nod, giving him a quick kiss. “Yeah, I’m good.”

“Good.” He smiles, letting me go. “Go check on your dragons.”

“Dragons? Multiple?” I eye him.

“You don’t think Gaia is just going to let you leave, right? She’ll want you to take her wherever you go, you’ve become a sort of parent to her now.”

“Of course.” I sigh. The little girl is amazing in how she’s holding up, but I’m not sure she’d be able to handle losing yet more people, especially people she’s decided are her family.

What will happen when we reach the research centre? Will Gaia’s parents still be alive? Somewhere, I hope that they are, just because it would be best if Gaia’s parents could return to her. But in what mental or physical state will they be in? Will they be in any state to look after their little girl anymore?

Fucking hell...

I’m not sure what I dread more, finding their dead bodies or finding that they’re still alive but mentally damaged beyond repair or beyond healing. Finding them would be good, but the state in which I might find them scares me.
