Chapter Nine

Billie leaned over a picnic table at the rodeo grounds, verifying the checklist on her clipboard. Micah tacked up blueprints on the support beams of the judges’ booth for her to study. Man, she didn’t have a clue. Should have gnawed on a pitchfork last night instead of bragging to anyone who would listen that she could handle the rodeo set up herself. A piece of cake…that’s what she’d said.

I’m an idiot.

“Not sure, Mic, but I think you’ve got some of those diagrams hanging upside down and sideways.”

“No kidding? But then again, how in blazes would I know?” He shook his head. “Thought you said you knew the ins and outs of this gig.”

“I may have exaggerated a little.” Sure, from the bottom of a margarita pitcher everything had looked easy-peasy last night, and she’d flapped her gums. Until her hangover kicked in at the crack of dawn, the same time the rental company’s vehicles rolled to a stop at the gate and started honking. And how was she to know it took a convoy of eighteen-wheelers to schlep in the rodeo equipment? Yikes.

She’d staggered outside to point them in the right direction—across the road and a half mile down from the ranch house to offload the stuff. “I didn’t expect anyone to take me seriously.”

“Hmm, guess we all got fooled.” Micah gave her a brotherly nudge on the shoulder and almost sent her flying. “Easy there, short stuff. Looks like you’ve lost your sea legs.”

See, that was the problem with drinking too much…it messed her up for days. She’d been stupid to hit the booze last night after surviving the explosion, especially since she didn’t usually drink. Now there was nothing but payback in her crystal ball—the shakes, a migraine, and the freaking rodeo grounds to set up.

Of course, Reece and her dad had cackled like a couple of hens with the first blast of a semi’s air horn this morning. While she’d held her head in her hands, trying to keep her brain from seeping out her ears, Rocket had carried her to Micah’s SUV and sent her on her way.

The big dope. He’d damn well known she was sick as a pup and up to her ears in misinformation if she thought she could handle this alone. Yep, he had worked the rodeo when he’d lived on the ranch. Helped her father with the setup and takedown more than once.

Way out of her element, Billie normally focused on the entertainment and contestants’ side of things. She booked live music and caterers, all while handling participants’ registration. This was a disaster of major proportions.

“What am I going to do?” Tossing her pen on the clipboard, she scratched her head. A stupid move when even the ends of her hair hurt. “I don’t know where to start.”

Palms in the air, Micah backed up a step. “Whoa, don’t look at me. I’m just the protection detail on this op. You’re on your own with the rest of it.”

“Coward.”

Mic ignored her.
