The young physicianâs assistant was eager to help at first. Seeing a major injury was an unusual occurrence there. Upon closer examination however, the young womanâs story became less and less plausible. The wound looked more like a high energy impact than a puncture wound, judging by the amount of bruising around the entry. The exit wound was also more indicative of a bullet than an arrow, which was the explanation the woman provided.
Marilyn suspected that the practitioner was becoming suspicious of her injury, and she began to keep a very close eye on him. Even though she had used her alias ID, all it would take was one phone call to jeopardize her plans.
He glanced up at her as he lifted the phone to his ear and saw her jerk suddenly to attention. He knew something was amiss. Marilyn stood from the rather uncomfortable ER bed, and moved towards him, her right hand on the Walther.
âI think itâs time you locked the doors.â She insisted, pulling the pistol from her pocket and training it towards his middle. There hadnât been a single person through the doors since she came in, and as far as she knew there was no one else there. He instantly dropped the phone on the receiver and raised his hands. âLock the damned doors!â She demanded.
Launching towards the front, Marilyn knew better than to let this one escape. She followed him closely, watching as he flipped the sign on the door, and turned the latch. âNow what?â He asked, shakily.
âWho were you calling?â She asked, poking him in the side with the barrel of the gun.
âThe attending, on call.â He murmured, too frightened to lie.
âI need you to fix this as best you can and load me up with antibiotics.â
âKaren, and Iâm assuming that is your name, you need to be admitted to a hospital.â He insisted. âYour, wounds, are far too serious for me to treat here.â
âAnd yet, you will treat me, or the next shift will be mopping up your brains.â Marilyn hissed.
The PA physically shook, as he attempted to place an IV in Marilynâs arm. It took three tries, but he managed. Marilyn was severely dehydrated, so he started fluids first. Everywhere he went, she followed, not trusting him at all. She watched as he mixed the Ancef, hanging it in tandem with the normal saline.
âSo, this Ancefâ¦â
âItâs a broad-spectrum antibiotic.â He said, shakily.
âAnd that is going to prevent an infection.â Marilyn asked, forcefully.
âNo. It will certainly help, however.â He wished heâd just said yes.
âWhat about something I can take by mouth?â
