The moment I get inside the house I curse myself for leaving the lattes behind. Iâm exhausted and uncaffeinated and the day has only just begun. Twenty-four hours, he said. Twenty-four hours and then what? I wonât wait to find out.
I lock the door behind me, scared. Not trusting anyone. I should never have left this house in the first place. Thereâs a reason Iâm so paranoid and now my anxiety is founded. Someone came for Rosie the moment we left the property. How long had they been waiting, and why?
I try Camden again. Even though I know itâs futile, I want to be sure. Because I donât want to put all these pieces together by myself. Heâs my rock, my hero. But he doesnât answer.
I have to be the hero now.
Starting by looking in Camdenâs office, I try and figure out where and how I can get the money. I can start there and then try and figure out who is behind this. Behind taking my daughter and our nanny.
The thought of Rosie, crying in her captorâs arms, sends a chill so deep through my body I press my hands against Camdenâs desk to hold me up. Itâs not the time to break down, itâs the time to fight back.
His office is large, walls covered in dark mahogany bookshelves, his desk a behemoth in the center of the room. Crimson-red velvet curtains hang from the windows, masculine and threatening. The space used to be his fatherâs, and I donât come in here often. Especially since his business started taking off this year. From what heâs shared it is all really good, profitable and not just a startup looking for funding. His security technology is incredible â I know because itâs installed all over our home. But I donât know the details of our financial picture. I need to figure it out. Now.
I start with our checking account.
Logging in on his desktop computer, I go to our online banking account. My password works even though I havenât accessed the account since Rosie was born. I havenât needed to â itâs not like I go anywhere.
I frown, though, when I look at the accounts. Our credit lines, savings and checking are all through the same bank. At least they were. What I am seeing now makes little sense.
There are balances on the credit cards â each of them are a few thousand dollars from their max.
There is a home equity line of credit totaling four hundred thousand dollars. When did Camden take this against the house?
My heart falls, though, when I see the savings account. Itâs empty, all of it gone. I was expecting around two hundred thousand dollars, what was left from Camdenâs inheritance.
And the real kicker? The checking account doesnât even have enough to float us for a month. Where did the money go?
I keep scrolling through the bank accounts, wanting to see a pattern, an explanation. I pick up my phone, calling Camden again; still there is no answer.
