Luke and James looked at each other, both with pity and fear in their eyes. They didn’t know what else they could do, other than try to help move the kayak along faster. They had both tried to stop the others, tried to talk them down from the idea as soon as it was uttered. They were lucky to have been left on the rooftop and not dropped off the other side of the building.

Later, when they were close enough to get out and walk, Jordan jumped from the kayak and ran through the water to his mother, who was still on her back. Her nose barely stuck up from the water; she was lucky to be breathing. Chong was on her stomach, shivering.

“I’m here,” Jordan said. He scooped Chong into his sweatshirt, bundling him like a baby who needed his warmth.

The boys held on to the boat as Jordan held his mother’s hand in his. She was still breathing, but it was shallow. “Mom?” He held her head in his arms and stroked her hair out of her face.

Chen coughed. “Jordy, I lost the car.”

“No, you didn’t lose it. I saw what happened. This is not your fault, Mom.” Jordan couldn’t fight his tears any longer. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t here to protect you. How badly are you hurt? Can you move?”

“I think it’s my back. Something happened. I can’t feel anything.”

Jordan clenched his fists. He closed his eyes and leaned his face up to the sky, letting the ash fall freely onto his skin. What was he supposed to do? He knew he wasn’t supposed to move someone with a back injury, it could make it worse. He shouldn’t even be holding her head, but he had to get her above the water. He checked his cell phone. No signal. There was no one around to help, no ambulances, no car to get to the hospital.

“We have to get you out of this water first, then we’ll figure it out. You’ll freeze if you stay here like this.”

He took his sweatshirt off to give her a little support under her head, allowing him to stand up with Chong. He was about to ask Luke and James for some help. There was nothing else for it. She had to move. They would just have to be careful with her. Chen spoke again, stopping him. “No, Jordy.”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you remember what your father said to you when you dropped out of school? About responsibility?”

“What? Mom, that was years ago. Why even bring that up—”

“He was right. You do have a responsibility. You’re a good man, son. You help those who need you.”

“I can’t listen to this.” He shook his head. “Hey guys—”

“It’s too bad.” She coughed again. This time blood came up, splattering onto her chin.

“Whoa!” Jordan bent back down to her, trying to take a closer look at her head and back without moving her. The water around her was turning red. “You’re hurt!” he cried. Then he realized it was a stupid thing to say.
