As much as Rob had enjoyed their garage encounter, he couldn’t help feel a little guilty after realizing Scott hadn’t eaten. After a quick rinse, he tossed on an old pair of cutoff sweats, and raced to the kitchen to make Scotty something to eat. Less than twenty minutes later, he plated a grilled cheese sandwich and slid it next to the bowl of tomato soup in front of Scott at their kitchen counter.

“Eat,” he ordered.

Scott smiled then picked up one triangle of sandwich and dunked it into the bowl of soup. “You made this for me our first night here.” He took a giant bite.

“I did. I might not be a gourmet chef like Finn, but give me a cast iron skillet and two slices of bread—”

“Oh, does that mean your famous French toast for breakfast?” Scott interrupted between bites. “Not that I’d take advantage of your first full day as a civilian or anything. You are a civilian, right?”

Robby looked at the clock. 12:03 am. “Wow…I guess I am. Huh.”

“Feels weird, doesn’t it?”

“A little. I’m not sure— I mean, obviously I planned for this. It is what I wanted,” Robby stressed.

Scott nodded. “I know what you mean, though. Some of that safety net is gone. And so is part of your identity. From the time I was a working adult, I was a firefighter. It was the conversational lead. It didn’t matter whether it was at a party or an emergency or anywhere in between. ‘Hi, I’m Scott. I’m a firefighter.’”

“Yes, exactly—that’s weird.”

“At first when I came here…when I was meeting folks, I’d get to my name and then sort of pause while I tried to figure out what the rest of the sentence should be.” Scott took another bite, then turned, his blue eyes serious. “Now we can have the same introduction. We’re Scott and Robby. We’re the owners of Mountain Shadows.”

“Oh, hey. You know I kind of love the sound of that. And if you want French toast in the morning, you better plan on hurrying through the rest of that dinner so we can get to sleep. It’s my turn to take the kids to school this week, remember? Breakfast is at six.”

“I thought we might go again. Turn about being fair play and all…”

“Horndog.” Robby washed the skillet and put it back on the stove to dry, then turned to face Scott over the counter. “Ready to talk about it yet? You did get in to see Danny, right?”

There was a long pause before Scott answered, and his face seemed to close down. “Yeah. He was…he is in pretty bad shape.”

Rob nodded. “I talked to Finn—he’s been down there to see him, too.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize…but that makes sense. He was friends with Pauline and DJ for a long time.” Scott finished his sandwich and pushed the plate away. “I went there full of guilt. Logically I knew that didn’t make sense—just as I knew Danny thinking he started the fire wasn’t right. I even told him I’d had similar dreams.
