CHAPTER TEN
Dragon Child
“Let me go!” I scream, struggling to pull from Kenyan’s firm grasp as he pulls me away from the Kronogrix. It seemed to be fighting something, but both creatures were so fast all we could see were blurs of grey and blue-green. Now was my chance to go find Nathan and drag him to safety- so why wouldn’t this guy let me go? “Kenyan! The Kronogrix is occupied- I have to get to Nathan!”
Tight-lipped, Kenyan doesn’t reply as he grimly hauls me up toward the surface, quickly leaving the bloody battle behind. I continue to yell at him and attempt to pull free, drawing Drake over to us. I look to him pleadingly, but he ignores me as well, grabbing my other arm and increasing the speed of our flight. Desperation flutters in my chest, and I look back down, hoping to see Nathan following after us. But we’ve already gone too far, and the water beneath me stares back in its infinite darkness.
By the time we get to the boat, I’m sobbing.
“Crystal?”
“Let me go,” I yell, finally yanking my arms from their grasps as they release their hold. “How- how could you? He could be dead now!” I scream, more sobs wrenching from my shaking body.
“Crystal, listen, I didn’t want to leave him behind either- nobody did. But that was our only chance to get out of there.” Kenyan looks at me, indecision tearing up his face.
Drake sits beside me in the boat and wraps an arm around my shoulders. “Hey. Kenyan’s right… but so are you. If he’s still alive, we have to help him. Right?”
“Of course,” I mutter, looking up at him with watery eyes.
“We have some weapons in the boat,” he continues as the other guys start pulling said weapons from their hiding places. “We’ll go back and either save him… or avenge him.”
Growling, I abruptly stand. “He’s alive!” Pausing, I close my eyes as more tears gush forth. “…But if he isn’t, that Kronogrix is going to regret it ever screwed with us.” The guys smile and nod and continue grabbing equipment. Growing impatient, I remind them, “Seriously, though, we don’t have much time. Every second…”
“We know, Crystal,” Aren softly says to me as he finishes strapping a giant harpoon to his back.
It only takes a few more moments before we’re declared ready to go, but each second causes my stomach to clench in worry. Leaping in headfirst and swimming down as fast as I can, I lead the group back toward Nathan. Every one of my muscles scream at me with each stroke, but I refuse to stop. They’ll recover, they always do, but Nathan may not. Nathan needed every second I could give him, and I refused to make him wait. I would save him, or die beside him. That stupid, dinosaur-like creature would not get away with this.
While I put every ounce of effort into swimming, the others chatter behind me.
“Can you believe it? There’s something down there that’s bigger, faster, and stronger than the Kronogrix!”
“No way, it’s not possible.
