It was Thursday, and one more day before I met up with Matty. I headed to the kitchen to make a salami sandwich, pulling out all the ingredients I needed from the refrigerator and pantry for lunch.
The mundane task did nothing to curb my guilt and pain for him, despite chatting with him for the past couple of days. His old life must have been really rough for him to spiral out of control so fast over a simple question about his phone pics. I hadnât meant to upset him. Deep down, I understood it wasnât really me, but I didnât know what his triggers were. How could I learn them if I understood nothing about him?
And he used that rubber band around his wrist a lot. I figured it was some therapeutic tool, since the more he got upset, the more he snapped it. Before we reached the surf shop, we seemed to sort it all out. He calmed down, and we both apologized to each other.
God, our relationship just started, and already we had tension. It wasnât his fault, nor mine, but I wasnât sure how to handle it if it happened again. I was only nineteen and no expert on relationships or mental issues. But things seemed calmer now. His texts were light, funny, and sweet, though it was hard to tell behind a phone. I would know for sure when I saw him again.
After I made my sandwich, I sat on a barstool at the counter, taking a bite, and scrolling through my Instagram to look at the pictures we took that day for the hundredth time.
âHey, Lu,â Mia said, stepping into the kitchen looking for food herself. She piled her dark, wavy hair on top of her head into a messy bun, and she still wore her pale blue pajama bottoms and matching tank top. Sheâd probably been studying all morning. It was all she did when she wasnât with us at the beach.
âHey, Mi.â
âYouâre home early from class.â She sat next to me with an apple, and took a crunching bite, hovering in my personal space to check out my pictures.
âYeah.â
âYou two are so cute together. I love the pictures. How exciting you got to see a turtle, too.â
âIt was a nice day.â
âThen why do you sound so⦠sad?â
I put down my sandwich, sighed, and shut my phone off. âMi, what are rubber bands on the wrist used for? Is it for stress or something?â
âItâs one of several therapeutic techniques used to treat things like anxiety. People with anxiety can get wrapped up too much in their minds as they spiral out of control. The snap of the band brings them back to the present. It's a physical reminder to get them to stop over-thinking and stop their anxiety from getting worse. Itâs not a cure or anything.â
âOkay, thatâs what I was wondering.â
âWhy do you ask?â
I picked at my sandwich, but not eating it, debating how much I should tell my sister. Mateo was
