I canât remember the last time someone other than West came out to the house. About midafternoon, a few hours before Charlie is supposed to arrive, Iâm suddenly possessed with the urge to straighten things up. Iâve spent less than a day with him and heâs already rubbing off on me.
Dante is very upset when I vacuum and glares from the corner. Juniper sleeps through all the chaos. About halfway through my attempts to fold my dish towels in three the way I remember my mom doing when I was a kid, I suddenly realize that Iâm nervous. Of what? Charlie doesnât make me nervous. But somehow, having him in my home does.
He said he needed casual, and I can sympathize with his need to take things slow. So Iâm overdoing it. Sex. No bank robberies, no interior design photoshoots. Just sex. Thatâs what weâre doing.
I manage to walk away from the towels, but Iâm sitting on my sofa wondering if I should have gotten a new carpet for the living room when a knock sounds on the door.
Too late for the carpet. Thank goodness for small mercies.
Dante barks and dances in circles as I let Charlie in.
âHey. Hi. Sorry.â
âFor what?â I ask.
Charlie pauses on the doorstep and frowns. âWhat?â
âYou apologized. What are you sorry for?â
âOh. Um. Nothing. Just a habit, I guess.â
And somehow, Charlieâs flustered glances as he steps around Dante and unzips his jacket are exactly what I need so that suddenly the dish towels and the carpet and every other thing are once again someone elseâs problem.
I lean in and kiss Charlieâs cheek. âItâs good to see you.â
He smiles shyly. âThanks. Itâs good to see you too.â
Heâs holding a black gift bag at his side, and the way heâs glancing around the room says he might have even forgotten itâs there.
âIs that for me?â I ask.
âWhat? Oh.â He rummages into the bag. âNo. I guess . . . I mean . . . maybe. I think itâs sort of for both of us.â As he speaks, he lifts out what I initially think is a tree branch and then a carving. Itâs only when he pulls out the second item, about eight inches long and slightly curved, shaped like a string of little knobs or beads that I realize what heâs brought.
âIs that a wooden dildo?â
If Charlieâs face gets any pinker, Iâm going to have to call the paramedics. âVann makes them,â he says.
So this is a sexy hostess gift?
âI said you should bring some toys you like. If you donât like toys, we donât need them.â
Charlie flings himself down on my sofa, face in his dismayed hands. âThatâs what Vann said.â
For a minute, Iâm worried Iâve made a terrible mistake. I like a submissive partner, but whatever Charlieâs going through may need more than sex to fix. But then Dante hops up next to Charlie and licks his ear, and even Juniper emerges from where sheâs been snoozing on my bed and curls up at his feet, and if my dogs like someone, he canât be all bad.
