Parking on Shoreham’s High Street, just a few metres from the Ropetackle, Ruby found Theo doing the same.

“Bit of a nip in the air,” said Theo on spying her.

“Another harsh winter on its way,” agreed Ruby.

They walked side by side to the building, Theo announcing which bell to press as they neared the door.

Over the intercom came a suspicious-sounding voice. “Who is it please?”

“It’s Psychic Surveys, Mr Lytle, Theo and Ruby.”

There was a slight pause before they were allowed in, during which Ruby looked a little despairingly at Theo. “Maybe he’s too sceptical for his own good?”

“We’ll soon find out,” Theo replied.

Mr Lytle’s flat was on the third floor, Ruby went to take the stairs but Theo stopped her.

“My dear girl, there’s a lift here.”

“Yeah, I know but…”

“Ruby, you’re not worried about taking the lift are you?”

“Of course not,” Ruby denied. As she waited for the grey metal doors to open, however, she surrounded herself in white light. Just to be on the safe side.

The trip to the third floor passed uneventfully. Nonetheless, Ruby was glad to be free of such a confined space. Mr Lytle was waiting in the hallway to greet them.

“Wow!” he exclaimed. “You’re not spooky at all.”

Immediately the Spooky Ruby mantra started up in Ruby’s head. Startled at how loud the voice was, at how it had come out of nowhere, rushing at her with something akin to manic-like glee, Ruby shut it down but she struggled for a few seconds to do so.

Theo turned towards her. “Everything all right?”

“Yes,” Ruby said before greeting their client.

In his mid-fifties, perhaps a little younger, Derek Lytle was well built with a good head of hair, dark in colour still and good dress sense – he had on navy trousers and a blue pinstripe shirt. He ushered them in, doing what so many clients do, surreptitiously checking from side to side that no one had spotted the strangers at his door. Apart from Theo’s pink hair and colourful scarves – which actually managed to look tasteful rather than weird – they wouldn’t give the neighbours too much to gossip about.

Offered the obligatory cup of tea, they took their cups and went to sit down on the sofa whilst Mr Lytle – ‘Call me Derek’ – explained what had been happening to him.

“Just last night I woke to find two people standing at the end of my bed. I’m getting quite used to ghosts popping up everywhere now. I wasn’t even that scared. I sat up and said hello.”

Theo looked impressed. “And did they reply?”

“No, they just stared straight ahead. They weren’t sinister or anything. Quite the opposite, they seemed benign.”

“And then what happened?” Ruby asked.

Derek shrugged. “I don’t know what happened to them but I lay back down and went off to sleep. They were gone by morning.”

“These people you see,” Theo probed further. “Have you always seen them?”

“No, that’s the strange thing, it’s only been in the last six months or so.”

“Nothing before that?”

Derek shook his head.

“I see,” Theo replied before turning to Ruby.
