Jennie sat on her narrow bed, her legs folded beneath her. The lamp on the bureau lit the two Indian rugs decorating the walls. Rae sat on her own bed massaging her sore feet.
âWeâve been here almost a month, Jennie. Do you think our feet will ever get used to this?â
âI doubt it. I have calluses on top of calluses. My mother would cringe if she knew. When I was a girl, I used to run barefoot through the house and gardens. My mother was appalled by my behavior, but my father said, âAbigail, let the girl have her fun.ââ Jennie smiled at the memory.
Rae laughed, the sound musical and long overdue. Since Mattâs departure, her manner lacked its normal cheerfulness. âJennie, do you miss your family very much?â Raeâs hands paused in their kneading.
âI think of them often.â Jennie worried about her mother. Abigail Andrews had suffered health problems ever since Jennieâs difficult birth. Was her mother doing all right, or had Jennieâs flight put her in bed? âYes, I miss them. I like it here, though. The West is so open compared to the city. Thereâs a certain freedom to it.â
âWill you write your folks again? Itâs been a few weeks.â
âI donât know. Thereâs so little I can say when I want to say so much. I want to tell them everything thatâs happened, about Cole and Matt, the Harvey House, even Miss Thompson.â Jennie leaned back against the wall. âSometimes I feel sorry for her, you know.â
âMiss Thompson?â At Jennieâs nod, Rae added, âShe doesnât have very many friends.â
âI didnât know she had any. Iâve only seen her work or disappear into her room.â
âI was being kind,â Rae said. âI donât think she has any, either. Sheâs not very friendly to anyone, especially men.â
âShe was good to Evan the other night.â
âYes, but heâs still a boy.â
âShe must be lonely at times.â Jennie remembered the consuming loneliness sheâd felt when sitting on the train as it chugged away from Boston.
âI think sheâs chosen to be alone. Maybe sheâs been a Harvey Girl for so long that sheâs tired of seeing all these faces every day and prefers to avoid everyone in her off time.â
Jennie pulled her knees to her chest, stretching her white cotton nightdress over them. âI can relate to that. If any train passenger from last week came through this week, I wouldnât know it was the same person.â Unless it was George Lampton. She still worried that he had identified her, but so far nothing had come of it.
Rae stretched her legs out in front of her and raised one dark blond eyebrow. âWhat about that rich young Englishman who took a fancy to you the moment he walked in the door?â
Jennie turned up her nose. âHe looked like a dandy, all self-important andâ¦â
âAnd what?â
âJust and. He didnât interest me in the least.â
âBecause heâs not Cole Bryant,â Rae said matter-of-factly.
Jennie narrowed her eyes. âRae Hansen, what are you trying to say?â
âIâm saying that whether you admit it to yourself or not, youâre smitten with Cole.
