A Swinging Time

The discount rack creaked as I searched for a suitable party gown within my price range. Budgetary constraints limited my options to a princess pink prom costume or a too-tight, too-short little number.

“Pick something already.” Lois threw back her head. “What about this shirt? Fancy if paired with a skirt or something.”

“This getup is a dress. In theory. Even I’m too tall to pull it off.” I parted the squished clothing. “I’m supposed to blend in with prominent country club people. I can’t throw on the first thing I find.”

“I don’t think you’ll discover anything suitable at the discount barn.”

I sighed, knowing she was right. “I suppose I can buy something outside my price range and return it later.”

“Stores tend to frown upon that.”

“But it always works so well on television.” As long as the tag didn’t pop out at the exact wrong moment in front of the villainous mean girl, who would rip it off with a snide remark.

Leaving the discount barn behind, we headed to an appropriate formal wear store on the other side of the mall. After another hour of searching and trying on clothes, I chose a flattering pleated A-line in jade chiffon. My credit card groaned at the two-hundred-dollar purchase. Shoes and accessories put me near my monthly budget.

“What about your outfit, Lo?”

“I can find what I need at home. The waiters wear slacks and crisp white shirts.”

“Lucky you.”

“Yeah, poor Becky. Forced to attend a formal soiree with a handsome actor escort.”

“The things we do to solve a murder.”

As we split a mall pretzel, Lois and I discussed a game plan for the party. Divide, conquer, and probe.

The country club elite organized the shindig to celebrate Ashton Ashley's induction as the club's newest member. The party was a perfect storm of suspects. Everyone received an invitation: the stars of Prime Suspect, Ashton’s friends, and other persons of interest.

Lois dipped her half of the pretzel in the nacho cheese. “I’m surprised no one revoked Justin’s invite.”

“Are you kidding? They live for this kind of gossip.” I checked the time. “We better go. I still need to shower, curl my hair, and do my makeup.”
