Gabe
There was no mistaking the disappointment on her face as she nodded miserably, and I quickly put down the dish in my hands to walk over to her. I reached out, wrapping one arm around her waist and pulling her against my chest.
âHey, itâs okay. We werenât really trying. From what I remember, youâve never been on a twenty-eight-day schedule, so the chances you were going to get pregnant from one night were low.â
She nodded. âItâs the same. I still get it about every thirty-two days or so.â
âYouâd already decided not to go ahead with getting pregnant, right? You said the timing is jacked up.â
âYeah, but I found out right after I fired Ron,â she whispered, leaning against me. âAnd I just sat there and cried. Like an idiot.â
âThereâs nothing idiotic about emotions,â I said, stroking one hand up and down her back. âNot to mention hormones.â
âI felt so inept. Like I wasnât capable of firing someone without having a meltdown.â
âDid you cry in front of him?â
âHell no.â
âThen it doesnât count. Youâre allowed to be as weak and scared and hormonal as you want behind closed doors. As long as you donât let them see it, you can do whatever the fuck you want. Youâre only human, Harper.â
âI know.â She didnât seem anxious to leave my arms and I liked having her there.
âWould an orgasm help?â I asked after a few minutes. âThe shower is just a few feet awayâ¦â
âHonestly, Iâm too hungry for an orgasm,â she said. âMaybe after dinner?â
âI can work with that.â I used my thumb and forefinger to gently lift her chin. âYouâre stronger than you think you are, babe. Youâre one of the strongest women I know.â
âYou think?â She looked dubious.
âWell, you donât see any other female owners in the league. Thatâs not because there arenât any that are smart enough or rich enough, but because itâs hard. Itâs a hard job even for a man. Professional sports is full of adversity, competition, and back-stabbing. Not to mention politics. Add being the only woman into the mix, and why would anyone willingly take that on? I think youâve got bigger balls than most men I know.â
âBigger than yours?â she deadpanned.
âWell, letâs not get crazy.â I put a soft kiss on the tip of her nose. âCome on, letâs eat, and then Iâll clean up the kitchen while you go relax.â
âYouâre spoiling me, Gabe.â
I hesitated, trying to carefully consider what I wanted to say. âI donât think I did enough of that when we were married. If weâre going to do this dating thing, Iâd like to be a better partner this time than I was last time. No matter what happens between us.â
âWe both made mistakes,â she said. âI wasnât perfect either.â
âSo weâre both figuring shit out in a new way.â
âBut weâre still the same people.â
âAre we?â I put a pork chop on each of our plates as she carried the corn and sweet potatoes to the island.
âI donât think leopards change their spots, you know? We grow and mature, but at our core, weâre still the same.
