STEP INTO YOUR PLACE

Published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, May 1915

In Britain, recruitment propaganda often presented the transformation from civilian to military life as a seamless transition. Little reference was made to the harsh, and sometimes brutal, regime of the army with its emphasis on unbending rules, discipline and occasional punishment. Similarly, there was little or no suggestion that active service entailed a very real risk of injury or death. Instead posters emphasised the communal nature of wartime experience, with men from all social classes and professions answering the call together.

The range of identifiable ‘types’ depicted in this poster, from office workers to labourers and lawyers, would have been well understood by contemporaries, and shows the influence of pre-war advertising techniques that stressed the importance of the ‘consumer’ (in this case the would-be recruit) being able to identify with the ‘product’ (i.e. enlistment).
