A big, warm force leans against me, prompting me awake. I open my eyes, the darkness puzzling me. Since giving birth to Liam, I’ve always slept with a night light so I can see him in his bassinet. Something must’ve gone wrong with the gadget. From the coolness of the air conditioner on my skin, the electricity is still on.

Air conditioner?

I sit up in bed, my body relaxing when I see Gabriel lying beside me, his chest softly bouncing as he sleeps. A smile emerges as memories of our lovemaking fills my mind. I reach over, brushing the hair from his face as a wave of tenderness washes over me. No need to pinch myself, because I didn’t imagine him saying I love you. The sincerity in his eyes, the emotion in his voice were the only confirmation I needed.

My full bladder prompts me to leave the bed, and I relieve myself and make my way back to the bedroom. Gabriel’s phone lights up on the side table as I approach, and though I shouldn’t—I can’t help myself—I glance at the screen.

I wished I hadn’t.

It’s 3am and I can’t sleep. I can’t stop thinking about you, the text message reads. Please hurry back home.

It’s from Janie O’Sullivan, and even if her name wasn’t displayed on the screen, I can tell from the gorgeous profile pic that it’s her. Gabriel’s phone is locked, so I can’t confirm if there’s a message thread or a random text. I want to believe it’s the latter—I need to believe it is. We just got past a major hurdle. We can’t handle another complication right now.

A part of me knows it’s best to wait until morning to confront him, but my curiosity won’t let me be. Gabriel’s phone requires his thumbprint to unlock it. He’s fast asleep. It won’t take long.

Don’t do it, girl. What if you see something you can’t handle?

I have to. There’s no way I can go back to sleep now.

With my heart pounding in my ears and my breathing paused, I lean over him, inching the phone close to his hand.

Gabriel grunts softly, stirring a little. I freeze, my mind searching for an explanation if he catches me like this. Lucky for me, he settles back down and doesn’t stir when I press his thumb against the screen.

The phone lights up and I pull back, opening the message Janie sent. I scroll up to where the conversation first began, two days ago.

Two days ago, when he professed how much he wants to be more than Liam’s dad. Two days ago, he vowed to fight for me.

I miss you, was Janie’s first message.

It took Gabriel six hours to reply, and his response cut me in two. I miss you, too.

The hell?

Then why are we doing this? Janie replied. Why are we on a break?

A break?

I look over to Gabriel comfortably sleeping, the urge to deliver hell on him so great, but I read on. Gabriel didn’t reply for an entire day, during which there was a barrage of messages from Janie demanding an explanation for his silence.
