Sam
She slides into bed beside me, my T-shirt fitting her like a short dress. My cock demands I strip it off her and make her mine, but it’s not going to happen. Not tonight. She’s rattled. Someone broke into her hotel room and stole intimate items.
And if I had to guess, that ‘someone’ is none other than the Ken doll who tried to lay claim to my cinnamon roll earlier today. My instincts aren’t wrong, and they haven’t dulled any over time as I’ve been toiling away in my watch shop instead of conducting covert ops. But I don’t want to tell Fawn. Not yet. It would only make her worry.
“Do you think the curse will catch up with me?” she whispers.
I pull her into my arms, taking care to keep my hips back. “If it does, I’ll be here for it.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” She lets out a sigh in the dark as Bear and Velvet walk into the room on silent paws. “My father knows about the TMZ piece, so he’s going to be mad. I don’t want him showing up here and making trouble.”
The cats jump onto the foot of the bed and settle in.
“I’ll handle all your troubles.”
She shakes her head. “It’s not that easy. He still sends money to my mom, and part of that arrangement is me keeping my identity a secret. I mean, it’s not a well-kept secret. I think plenty of people in the industry know, but that’s not because I told them. I’ve only trusted very few people with the truth. If one of them leaked it to the tabloids, I don’t know how I’m going to handle that sort of betrayal. Do you know what I mean?”
“I’ve dealt with plenty of betrayal over the years. My crew, the Red Dragoons, was a tight-knit faction. Mercenaries, sure. But we took out bad guys, cleaned up messes. I’m not saying we were white knights by any means, but we didn’t kill indiscriminately, and we always did our best to minimalize casualties. That was how it was. Until Diego took over, and then our missions became far more focused on the pay-out. We began getting assignments with questionable targets. And when I refused to carry them out?” I draw a finger down the scar through my eyebrow. “Betrayal wasn’t far behind.”
“I’m sorry.” She strokes my arm, her fingertips soft.
“Don’t be. I did what I had to do to get out of that life. But yeah, I know how you’re feeling.” I don’t tell her that I’m going to find her snitch and exact payback. She doesn’t need to know that part. Not yet, anyway.
“What a weird day.” Her voice becomes a little quieter. “I met you, and we kissed, and maybe the curse is gone, or maybe it’s waiting, and then my room got messed up, and then the gossip sites. Coincidences? How can so much happen in one day? Or maybe this is the curse setting the scene, you know? Like it’s doing a set dressing, preparing for the big finish now that I finally got my first kiss.
