Chapter 23
Jase watched as Garrettâs boss took the now in awe Red and left for the kitchen while a few more people made their way toward Garrett to tell him how great heâd played. It was obvious that Garrett hated it. Every time someone said something nice about Garrett, his muscles tensed, and his complexion turned red. It was all very slight, but Jase didnât miss it.
Jase wanted to get Garrett out of there. And not because of his reaction to all the praise. Hell, if Jase could, he would leave Garrett listening to compliments all night, especially, if it meant Garrett would believe them. No, Jase wanted to break Garrett free because Garrett appeared exhausted. Ready to collapse where he stood.
Jase noticed a lull in the crowd and whispered into Garrettâs ear as he grabbed Garrettâs hand. âDo you need to say goodbye to anyone?â
A slight glimmer of hope showed in Garrettâs eyes. âNope. Already spoke to everyone I should.â
Jase tightened his grip on Garrettâs hand and headed to the door. Once outside, Garrett took a deep breath, and Jase followed suit. The distant lullaby of waves reaching the shore replaced the noise from inside the restaurant, offering them a calming peace. The tension in Garrettâs stance dissipated and made Jase smile.
Jase eyed the parking lot, hoping to spot Garrettâs truck, but the stars hidden amongst the clouds rendered the night too dark to see.
âWhatâs the matter? Did you forget something?â Garrett asked.
Shit. âYour guitar.â Jase hadnât even thought of the instrument in his plan to help Garrett escape.
âRight here,â Garrett said as he lifted the opposite hand Jase held.
Jaseâs shoulders relaxed. âGlad someoneâs thinking.â
Jase stood in place and adjusted his eyes to the darkness. He still couldnât spot Garrettâs truck.
âWhatâs up?â Garrett asked.
âI donât know where you parked.â
âWow. I remembered the guitar but forgot Iâm driving.â Garrett peered around them for a moment, appearing to get his bearings. âIâm on the side.â With his hand still gripped in Jaseâs, Garrett led them across the parking lot.
âIf youâre too tired, I can drive,â Jase suggested.
âIâm good.â Garrett offered a weak smile. âUnless the thought of me behind the wheel scares the hell out of you.â
âNo.â Jase knew Garrett would say something if he couldnât drive. âJust thought Iâd give you a break if you needed one.â
âThanks.â
Once at the truck, Garrett stared at Jase. Not sure what Garrett wanted, Jase stared back at him.
âMy hand. I need it back.â Garrett held up their locked hands.
Fuck. It seemed so natural. Jase forgot heâd taken hold of Garrett. And once their hands separated, a slight chill raced from Jaseâs empty hand to his heart. A frown marred Garrettâs face, making Jase believe Garrett felt the loss too, and the thought gave Jase hope. Hope that after the month Garrett had insisted on, Jase and Garrett might end up together.
In the truck, they relaxed into a comfortable silence until Garrettâs stomach spoke.
âOh shit.â Jase leaned forward. âYou hung out with us during your break and never ate.
