Chapter Eight

“Mace.”

The sound of his name roused him. He rolled over, trying to hide from the noise.

“Mace.”

He growled and covered his head. He’d only just gotten to sleep for Pete’s sake. “Bugger off, Landon. I’m not in the mood.”

“So you’re turning me down? Funny, I took Nash to be the more sensible, needs-his-sleep kinda guy, not you.”

Mace bolted awake, slinging the sheets aside as Reese’s voice washed over him. She stood off to his right, hovering beside the bed like a ghostly apparition. Though the room was encased in shadows, he could see a slight curve of her lips and the way her hair hung in wisps around her face, some parts pulled free from her ponytail. Her eyes were bright, but he could tell she was exhausted.

“What’s wrong? Landon, Nash—”

“Are fine. In fact, they sleep like the bloody dead. And since when does Landon snore?”

Mace tried to shake the dull fog from his head. He had no idea what she was talking about or why she was standing in his room. “Are you okay?”

“Perfect. I finally figured it out. The bastard had a long-range, night vision camera.” She laughed. “Now it all makes sense.”

Mace watched her walk back to the door, but she didn’t leave. Instead, she turned and paced his room, much like he’d done that first night waiting for her to show up. He suppressed a laugh. He could see how her unique tendencies might get on someone’s nerves, but that was just because they didn’t understand the genius within the girl.

He swung his legs over the side and got up, hoping the act would stop her in her tracks. “Sweetheart. While I’m thrilled everything makes sense to you, I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Care to enlighten me?”

“You don’t…” She paused, looking as if she was confused by his statement. “Right. When you all left, I still hadn’t answered some annoying questions. Like how the guy had stayed out there for seven days but left no traces behind and—” Her speech quickened until he found it hard to follow her.

“Reese. Sweetheart. You need to slow down. Remember. I’m the big Neanderthal type.” He held out his hand. “Let’s start at the beginning…and assume I’m not nearly as clever as you.”

Reese smiled, her teeth flashing white in the darkness. She walked toward him, taking his hand and joining him on the edge of the bed. “Sorry.” She tucked some of the stray hairs back behind one ear. “Okay. I’ve been staring at those pictures for hours, but I couldn’t answer some pretty basic questions. Like how the guy knew what day to camp out in the forest to catch you guys entering or leaving the studio. You hadn’t been back there since the first attack, and it’s not like you’re on some kind of schedule.”

Mace nodded. “We go out most days, but you’re right. It was more to dispel some nervous energy than anything else.”

Reese grinned at him. “And here I thought it was all a ruse to impress me.
