Matthew

Greg’s late. He’s never late.

I try to tell myself that he’s probably caught in traffic or something. There must be a reasonable explanation for this. He’s likely driving, which must be why he isn’t answering his phone. There probably isn’t anything wrong.

Despite these very logical arguments, my mind insists on going to the worst possible case scenarios. What if Greg was in an accident? The victim of a mugging gone wrong? Any number of horrible things could have happened to him.

I’m on the verge of calling the police, though I know they won’t take this seriously. Greg is only half an hour late. They’ll only log him as a missing person after twenty-four hours, I think. Half an hour certainly isn’t going to cut it, at least according to them.

I almost collapse in relief when the doorbell finally rings. I wrench it open, ready to throw my arms around Greg, but I’m brought up short by the sight before me.

It’s not Greg.

It’s Richard.

It’s Richard, and he’s been beaten up badly.

“Matt,” he mumbles, swaying on his feet.

“Richard! What happened?”

Richard looks me right in the eye. “Greg happened.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Greg did this to me.”

“No! He wouldn’t—”

“You’re calling me a liar?”

I don’t understand. Richard wouldn’t lie, not about something like this, but I can’t understand why Greg would do this. He’s been wanting to win Richard over for weeks now. How in the world would beating him up achieve that goal?

Goals aside, that’s not who Greg is. He couldn’t just attack an innocent person, and yet, it seems like he has.

“What happened?” I repeat.

“He did this to me. That’s all you need to know.”

I put my arm around Richard and draw him inside, sitting him down on the couch. “No, it’s not all I need to know. Tell me everything.”

I’m sure there must be more to the story. There has to be.

“Don’t you trust me?”

“I do trust you.”

But I also trust Greg, and I know there are two sides to every story. The fact that Richard seems reluctant to tell me what happened indicates that there is more to this than he’s saying. I cling to the hope that there is something that will excuse Greg’s behavior, but as I look at Richard’s puffy face, I wonder if there is anything that could excuse this.

I want to insist that Richard tells me everything, but he’s shaking slightly with pain, and he has a light layer of sweat covering his skin. He clearly needs care, not interrogation.

I think of taking him to the hospital, but that will surely get the police involved, and I don’t want to do that until I’ve heard Greg’s side of what happened.

“Just lie back. I’m going to get the first aid kit.”

I don’t know a whole lot about first aid, but fortunately, none of Greg’s wounds seem serious. I grab the disinfectant and start dabbing at the split skin. Richard winces but doesn’t otherwise complain.

“You should be okay. This is going to swell up even more and hurt
