Chapter 10

This was a bad idea. A very, very bad idea.

Macy was once again pacing the floor of her living room. At this point, she was surprised she hadn’t burned a path in her goddamn carpet. Darwin watched lazily as she moved around, unaware of her inner turmoil.

Despite the alarm bells going off in her mind, Macy knew she had done the right thing. Harper had looked so dejected when she’d considered missing the wedding. Macy knew family was already a sore spot for Harper; they’d discussed it at one of their lunch outings. The bastards had kicked her out of the house when they’d found out she was queer and cut off nearly all contact with her afterwards.

Harper had been excited at the prospect of reconnecting with a kind sibling and seeing some of her loved ones again. If Macy could help facilitate that, why shouldn’t she? Well, she knew why she shouldn’t, she was just choosing to ignore it.

It was currently a Thursday night. Em and Luna hadn’t had any contact since Macy had canceled their date. It was approaching the time Em would normally ring Luna for her services, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Macy would doubtlessly be a mess if they talked on the phone. There was no way Harper could ignore the tremor in her voice, or the nervous apprehension that was likely to creep into her tone. Instead of calling, she decided to open her texted messages.

Macy: Hey Luna, sorry to cancel again, but I can’t make our call tonight. Hopefully we can talk soon xxx

Macy waited for a reply, but it never came—which was strange. Luna was always quick to respond to her. Maybe she had been hurt by Em’s failure to show up at the restaurant. Macy scrubbed a hand over her face. It seemed she really was fucking up on every front possible.

At least she hadn’t let Harper exchange numbers with her. That had been too fucking close. Harper must think she was an absolute nut for wanting to correspond over work emails, but that was a sacrifice she was willing to make.

Speaking of emails…

She hopped onto her work laptop, logging into her university Microsoft account. As promised, Harper had sent a message detailing everything Macy needed to know for Saturday.

It would be a two-and-a-half-hour drive to the wedding venue in New York. Macy was set to pick Harper up at noon from her place, which would give them plenty of time to arrive at the wedding ceremony and the reception that followed. They’d be spending a night in town to attend a family brunch the next morning, and Macy was steadfastly ignoring the fact they’d be sharing a hotel room.

I suggest we discuss the details of our relationship during the drive. Harper had suggested in the email.

Fake relationship, Macy mentally corrected, once again questioning her sanity for going along with the ruse. This had not been part of The Plan she’d concocted to set everything right, but
