7 Sebastiano Serlio

Placing perspective at the service of architects

PIETRO ROCCASECCA

In 1545, Sebastiano Serlio published a treatise on perspective in Paris. As is well known, this treatise was not an autonomous work but rather part of a vaster work on architecture divided into several books, published non-sequentially in various European cities between 1537 and 1551.1 Book II, credited to “Sebastiano Serlio, from Bologna,” was itself divided into three parts, which were devoted respectively to the perspective of planes, to perspective with respect to bodies, and to the “material” perspective of scenography, or stage scenery. I will dwell here on the first two of these. Serlio wanted to keep a low profile and he organized his treatise by subjects, which he elaborated in “lessons” of increasing complexity — his goal was to teach the strict basics needed to produce a perspectival drawing of an architectural idea.
