Once I left Ward’s house, I ran a few long-overdue errands until midafternoon, before finally returning home to write more notes on Ward’s story and to set up a meeting with Daniel in person. Honestly, I’m not sure how he’ll respond to my idea for the true-crime series, but I do know that all my ducks have to be in a row for him to even consider it.
The receptionist put me in his calendar for the following Friday at one o’clock, which should be ample time for me to prepare. I had forty-five minutes until I needed to get ready for my second date with Scott, so I finished my article on school lunches and started to research another piece for the Fairfield Chronicle on the new mini-mall in downtown Westport.
An hour later, as I was sifting through statistics on the state of retail, I realized it was time to get in the shower. I did my own makeup, which was hardly as flawless as when Chloe did it. I even blew out my hair and curled the ends. Then I dressed myself in the eggplant-colored wrap dress Maggie and Chloe rejected the last time, slid my feet into three-inch nude high heels, and threw on a jean jacket for a more casual style. There’s nothing wrong with trying to look nice, I reasoned, while I attempted to catch myself in every angle of the three-way, full-length mirror in my closet.
When I pulled into a spot in front of Kawa Ni, a modern Pan-Asian pub on the Saugatuck River, I was strangely apprehensive. On a first date, there’s nothing to lose. The second time around, you’re committing to advancing things, at least a little.
Before getting out of the car, I applied another layer of lip gloss and checked my reflection in the fold-down mirror. When I entered the small but cozy space, Scott was already seated at the end of a long communal table and stood up to greet me. It was so refreshing to have someone treat me like a lady again. Jeremy and I rarely dined out alone together, as we’d promised we would every Friday night after we had Chloe, but on the rare occasion we did, it was challenging to distract him from his cell phone.
“Hey there.” Scott leaned in to kiss me on the cheek. He smelled like a combination of fresh-cut grass and patchouli. I kind of wanted to bury my nose in his neck, but I didn’t.
“Hi, how are you?”
“Great. This table okay?” He took my jacket and hung it on a hook nearby. I could tell by his gestures that he was nervous, too.
“It’s perfect. Thank you.” I situated myself on the high-top stool, which was much more comfortable than it appeared to be.
“You’ve never been here?”
“Surprisingly, no.”
Well, not that surprisingly, since the last time I went out to dinner without Scott was Joe’s Pizza after one of Chloe’s field hockey games. And it’s been a while since that, because I’m officially persona non grata to her.
