CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Monday

Cubbison’s Farm

Harford, Pennsylvania

Luke slept hard for three hours. Accustomed to going to bed after eleven and waking long before dawn, three hours sufficed under the circumstances. He freshened up, donned his Realtree camo pants and an olive drab green tee shirt, and found his way to the kitchen, where his mom had laid out some biscuits she’d baked early that morning. Luke judiciously spread on some butter and squirted honey they’d purchased a week ago from a local farmer who was an accomplished beekeeper. The beekeeper had made a deal with Emma to trade jars of the delicacy in exchange for soups she’d preserved in Mason jars. The honey was a hit with her customers.

He was still munching on a biscuit as he grabbed his rifle and holstered his pistol. He grimaced and shook his head as he walked out the door in search of his mother. He was fully awake, not dreaming, and yes, he was walking out of his home prepared to shoot anyone who threatened his family.

“Mom!” he shouted, his eyes darting between the barn, the storage buildings, and the market.

“I’m in here!” she shouted back. Luke noticed the back door of the market was slightly ajar as he approached. The hot, stagnant air, coupled with the livestock being so close to the house, had drawn biting flies from around the farm. Luke was already concerned that the cattle would overgraze the undersized pens adjacent to the main house and the barn. He hadn’t thought about how the dry weather of August would allow the mineral-rich cow pats to fester and therefore attract flies, which also fed on the cows’ blood.

“Hey,” he greeted her. “Tryin’ to keep the flies out?”

“Vicious biters,” she grumbled as she smacked at her thigh. Emma rarely wore jeans in the summertime as indicated by her tan, toned body. With the herd so close to the house, she might have to change her habits.

With a grunt, she lifted a wooden crate onto the checkout counter and turned the notepad toward her. She began to scribble some notes, which piqued Luke’s curiosity.

“How’s it goin’?”

“I’ve decided to kill ’em,” she began, causing Luke’s eyes to grow wide. Then she smiled as she finished her sentence. “With kindness.”

“Oh, okay,” he said hesitantly. He wasn’t sure where his mother was going with this. He’d reconciled himself to the fact that they would have to kill them at some point. Hopefully, not today.

“Trust me, after last night, I’d rather shoot them. Especially after what you’ve told me. I can only imagine what happened to the Yoder family.”

“Mom, I feel like I should’ve done something. You know, at least moved closer to get a better look. It was just, um, you’re my priority.”

Emma sighed and stopped writing the notes. She turned to Luke and grabbed him by his broad shoulders. She was proud of her son, who seemed to rationally think through his decisions. “Our family has to be our number one concern. Your dad and brother are searching a city of ten million people for Sam and Cat.
