Chapter 11

Raine

Raine might not have liked surprises, but she knew Bryn was big on them. Deep down, she probably also secretly liked to be romanced, appreciated, charmed. All the things Raine hadn’t really given her an option for. She’d put out her terms, and since they were just mutually agreeable enough, Bryn had accepted.

She hadn’t missed the way Bryn looked the night before at the book club. What was even more disturbing was the way the air seemed to shimmer between them the entire night. The way it took every ounce of Raine’s control to hold herself back. The way it felt like torture not to touch Bryn, even in front of her friends. She hadn’t expected the strange longing she felt as the book club wrapped up and Bryn had taken her time saying her goodbyes. Raine could tell Bryn enjoyed it. Her friends welcomed her. She’d expected the whispers in her ear as she went out the door.

You’d be crazy to let her go. Sometimes you meet the right person when you least expect it. I see the way you’re looking at her, pretending that you’re not. You’re into her. You don’t want to let her go. So don’t. Real dating doesn’t have to ruin everything. Sometimes things work out.

You let that girl go or hurt her in any way, no more chocolate chip cookies for you.

That last bit was from Granny Alberta. She’d laughed after, like it was a joke, but Raine could guess she was serious. Everyone was protective of Bryn after meeting her just once. Anyone with eyes could see she was sweet and kind, but all of her friends also could tell she was magical. That made them want to believe in something that couldn’t happen.

Raine knew that, and she was still pulling up outside Bryn’s towering building. She was still getting out, a bouquet of flowers in her hand. She still walked through the lobby, nodded at the security guy who was there in the evenings, and went up in the elevator. The night she’d come up with Bryn, she’d watched her put the code in and she typed in the six numbers on the keypad. The elevator hummed its way up through all those floors until it finally stopped and the doors slid open.

What the hell am I doing? Flowers? Really?

Grand or semi-grand romantic gestures weren’t beyond her. Flowers certainly weren’t a signal of some deeper bond or an indication that she’d changed her mind. Just because she didn’t usually bring them didn’t mean anything.

“Oh!” Bryn gaped as she opened the door to her place. “I didn’t think you’d be here for a few hours yet.” She flicked her eyes up and down, taking in the form-fitting black dress Raine had on. “Uh, you’re dressed very nicely. And in heels. Wow. Are we going out? Is there something I forgot? I’ve been really stressed about this paper I’m writing and I swear my brain is like Swiss cheese. Things just keep falling out through the holes.
