Chapter 48
April 11
Madison
Thereâs something else I donât get,â Slater said. âIf this is Nobel prize-winning science, why hide it like this? Why change the hair color on a hundred babies and pawn them off as the products of surrogate mothers? If Rawlings is the scientific force behind this, wouldnât he want the recognition?â
They were gathered at a Greek restaurant around the corner from the FBI office.
Jenna nodded. âIt is out of character for him. Heâs a relentless self-promoter.â
âYet, not a word from him on this technology.â Slater said.
âWalk me through this again, Jenna,â Ray said.
âThe more I think about it, the more itâs coming together. SFP obtains sperm and eggs from people who believe that a surrogate will carry their baby. SFP fertilizes the eggs, maybe even in Rawlingsâs lab here in Madison. They isolate the genes theyâre interested in from the embryoâmaybe genes for hair color, eye color, height or whatever else they want to insert into a new embryo.
âMeanwhile, they find a couple undergoing IVF. While theyâre doing PGD on that coupleâs embryo, they knock out some genes and knock in genes from the parents who will ultimately receive the child. After successful IVF, the real mother delivers the child nine months later. Then, at some point after the childâs born, they abduct it and deliver it to the couple who believe a surrogate has carried their baby. The couple receiving the child truly believes it to be theirs. Why shouldnât they? It looks like them.â
âThat makes sense for Jason Robertson. Your situationâs different. They didnât sneak in and take Rachel at night. They assaulted you and took her. Thereâs a different motive here. I believe Rawlings did something to provoke it,â Ray said.
The table was silent.
âIf we could get into Rawlingsâs computer system,â Jenna said, âI bet weâd find some answers.â
âThen letâs do it.â said Terri Cox. Up to now sheâd been silent.
âThereâs no way heâd give us access to his information. Certainly not if he had something to hide,â Slater said.
âYouâre right. Anything theyâd willingly give us would be garbage. Letâs get a covert surveillance warrant. I can be everywhere in their system, and they wonât know it,â Cox said.
âIâm not sure how youâd do it,â Jenna said. âItâs a very secure system.â
âThat wouldnât be problem,â Cox said.
âHow do you figure?â Ray asked.
âI spent eight years at NSA. If I canât get in, I know people who can.â
âEight years? How old are you Terri?â Jenna asked.
âIâm twenty-six. I finished college at MIT when I was eighteen. Thatâs when the NSA hired me.â
âAnd you left the NSA because?â
âEh ... it was boring.â
