CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Henley
Unpacking and meeting more of my houseguests had done me in. I wasnât sure about the living situation, even if it was a beautiful house. The girls had already made up their minds about me. Either because theyâd found out about the sex tape or because I played hockey; the only friendly one had been Chloe.
I wanted to hate her for abandoning me to the basement, but I couldnât. If this was what she had to deal with being a snowboarder, then I understood. Hated it. But understood.
âSo, Henley. We heard that Fletcher dropped you off. Whatâs the story there?â Brynn, another figure skater, asked me.
Iâd come down to the kitchen to grab some food and had been bombarded with their critical questions ever since.
âOh, um, Fletcher and Iâve known one another for a while. His younger sister was my roommate in college.â
âHmm, is that all?â another female asked. Iâd already forgotten her name. It was Coco or Chanel or something like that. She picked up a carrot stick and took a giant chomp while she waited for me to answer.
I debated on how much to share. While it wasnât a secret, I didnât want the gossip mill to run about me before classes started.
âWeâre getting to know one another again,â I said, deciding it was better to go with a version of the truth.
The three girls looked at one another, gearing up to ask me a million more personal questions, no doubt, and I knew I couldnât take it anymore. It had already been an hour of questions about why I left hockey and what it was like to date Dakota Hughes. Gag.
âWow, is that the time? I have someplace I need to be. Thanks for the snacks. Iâll see you around, I guess.â
I backed out of the kitchen and hustled toward the front door. I was too nervous to run upstairs to grab anything, so Iâd have to make do with the outfit Iâd been wearing. It would be miserable if they cornered me like that every time I entered this house.
Once the door closed, I cursed as I realized I didnât have my keys. Hopefully, they wouldnât lock me out. Sprinting down the steps, I headed in the direction of Fletcherâs house. It wasnât super close, but walking a mile was preferable to dealing with the Barbie Brigade.
I knew it wasnât fair of me to call them that. They were lovely women, and I was sure they had pleasant personalities under the hostility and judgment. But they werenât the type of girls I typically hung out with. To each their own and all that.
Walking at a brisk pace, I began to sweat across my brow. I was so focused on my thoughts and how I would stand living with these women that I jumped a mile in the air when a horn honked behind me.
Holding a hand to my chest to calm my racing heart, I lifted the other to shield my eyes so I could make out the vehicle that had spooked me.
