It was absolutely true, Zane would reflect much later, how the majority of people never thought it would happen to them. They read about disasters and tragedies in the newspaper, or sat glued to the television, horrified but removed. Distant. Terrible things were always remote, never touching most peopleâs lives.
Zane was not most people.

Tanner scanned the bar, nodding at Lily when she caught his eye. âZane,â he mouthed in question.
Lily inclined her head toward the kitchen, brow furrowing at Tannerâs solemn expression. Tanner pushed through the kitchen door, calling his brotherâs name.
âIn here.â Zaneâs voice was muffled over the roar of the freezer fan. He appeared seconds later slamming the cooler door shut behind him. âFuck, itâs cold in there.â He rubbed his hands together, bringing them to his lips to blow warmth over his frozen fingers. He stilled when he saw Tannerâs face. âWhat.â
âWhereâs your phone?â Tannerâs face was pinched, serious, and Zaneâs gut dropped, dread sinking into his bones.
âI forgot it at home this morning. Whatâs going on, Tanner?â
Tanner shook his head, mouth opening and closing. He stepped forward to grip Zaneâs arm. âGray has been in an accident.â
Zaneâs ears buzzed, all of the sound leeching from the room until there was only the roar of the blood in his veins as it rushed to his head. He felt Tannerâs fingers tighten around his bicep and he winced. âWhere is he?â Zane was shocked at how normal his voice sounded, steady, strong. He shook Tannerâs arm off, looking to the kitchen door when Lily stepped through. She whitened at their faces.
âWhat is it?â
Zane shook his head, unable to answer her, head reeling. His phone. His goddamn phone. He hadnât spoken to Gray since that morning, when he had kissed him goodbye at the door, a slow, lazy play of lips, as if they had all the time in the world.
They were supposed to have all the time in the world.
Tanner stepped back into Zaneâs vision, blocking him from the kitchen door. âHeâs at Mercy Hospital. He was on the interstate, there was a ten-car pileup. A semi jackknifed. Harry called my office when he couldnât get you on your cell,â Tanner paused, sorrow in his eyes. âZane, itâs...itâs not good.â
âIâm going,â Zane said, shoving past him, not wanting to hear more.
âIâll drive.â Lily reached for the keys and damn Zaneâs rotten life but they were both blocking the kitchen door now, and he was desperate, frantic to get to Gray. He thrust the keys at her.
âClose the bar, Tanner.â Zane was out of the kitchen and across the bar in seconds, finally in motion, propelled forward by fear.
Tanner pulled Lily into a quick embrace. âDrive careful. Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
