Since Chuck was seasoned with conference experience from his insurance career days, he directed the Paraflush® booth setup the night before the exhibit hall opened and attended the welcome dinner while Erik stayed in the hotel room and conducted a blog radio interview about his story.
The next day, with Chuck’s lead, it didn’t take long for Erik to get comfortable in the exhibit hall and make a little splash at the conference. It even led to his invitation as a guest speaker for the following year’s Assistive Technology Conference. The staff from North Carolina’s Vocational Rehabilitation program who helped facilitate the event were proud to have one of their own rehab clients actually participating as a vendor. As Mila’s handler, I presented her for a late day cameo booth appearance and she immediately stole the show. Erik perched her on his lap and took a roll through the exhibit hall to show her off. The only thing missing was Jenny, who wasn’t able to take off work. I hoped she could attend next year’s conference. I wanted her to see how her commitment to Erik had helped him blossom into so much more.
That week, the offer we made on the house in Graham, North Carolina was accepted. At the same time we had multiple offers on our house in Pennsylvania. The ease and congruency of selling one house, while buying another and moving to another state, was almost unheard of. Southern hospitality welcomed us kindly; the gentleman that sold us his house graciously built a garage entrance ramp for us so Erik would have easy access to the house and there wouldn’t be any more blood spilled on the front walk. It was all said and done within eight weeks. That’s when you know God is in the driver’s seat and you better just hold on for the ride; but buckle your seat belt. As if there weren’t enough wild rides in this story, it gets even better.
On Sunday October 6th, 2013, we were traveling from Pennsylvania to North Carolina to close on our house in Graham and I got a call from Jenny. When I answered the phone she greeted me with, “Oh, I just had to tell somebody.”
My heart skipped a beat. “What?” I asked anxiously. “Is everyone okay?”
“Yes, we’re all okay. But Erik is at the hospital with someone else.” Then she continued to tell a story that, quite honestly, sounded like a big fish tale. I listened intently with my eyebrow half cocked in disbelief.
As it goes, Erik was working on an outboard boat engine in his garage late into the night. It was 4:30 a.m. when he finally finished up. The outboard engine that once sputtered and stalled was buzzing like a bee. I’m sure the neighbors appreciated that in the wee hours of morning. Anyway, he shut the engine down, removed his noise silencing head phones and rolled out the open garage door to throw away some trash. In those few seconds, across the silence of a crystal clear starry night, he heard it ~ the unmistakable sound of tragedy.
